YesAsia Editorial Description

Chan Koon Tai returns in one of his signature roles in Big Brother Cheng, the hit sequel to the popular action-drama The Teahouse. Previously, Big Brother Cheng (Chan Koon Tai) had left his job as the just proprietor of the local teahouse, but before long his former comrades call him back! A variety of criminals threaten the daily lives of Big Brother Cheng's lower-class Hong Kong brothers and sisters, and it takes a man of Cheng's righteous determination to reclaim the streets for the common man! The citizens cheer for Cheng's tough and just ways, and when he saves the local police captain's life, he earns the cops' respect too. But such righteousness comes with a price. As Big Brother Cheng's legend grows, the cops can no longer ignore his vigilante ways. And with a number of revenge-seeking foes after him, Big Brother Cheng may be in for his toughest times yet!

Like The Teahouse, Big Brother Cheng fuses solid melodrama with social commentary and hard-hitting action. As the just Big Brother Cheng, Chan Koon Tai exudes the same presence and screen charisma that made him one Shaw Brothers studios' most popular kung-fu stars! A sizable hit in 1975, Big Brother Cheng is an affecting and entertaining film, and one of the defining Shaw Brothers movies of the seventies!

Shaw Brothers' number one action hit of 1975, and deservedly so. The character of one-man kung-fu dynamo Big Brother Cheng and kung-fu superstar Chen Kuan-tai were made for each other. A Robin Hood-like restaurant manager who socks it to the thugs in order to make the mean streets of Hong Kong a little less Mean, Big Brother Cheng made his first appearance in the extremely popular The Tea Hous, The success of which spawned this even more successful sequel.

A sorry sequel Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
"The Tea House" is one of my Shaw Bros. favorites, so I really was looking forward to seeing its sequel, "Big Brother Cheng". However, the sequel went off the tracks early on and never recovered. "The Tea House" ends with a powerful and haunting scene, but the sequel simply scraps that ending and thrusts its title character back into his familiar milieu almost as if nothing had happened. What follows is a steady stream of episodic events with no particular theme other than the need for vigilante violence. Very disappointing.

Big brother Cheng Customer Review Rated Bad 5 - 5 out of 10
This is part 2 of the 70's box-office hit " Tea House " . Celestial had released the Mandarin version of the "Tea House" but the Cantonese version of "Big brother Cheng". Perhaps Celestial should be more consistent interms of versions for furture releases.
