舞台は、常夏の島ハワイ。大型リゾート・ホテルの建築現場で働くサーファー、ジャック（オーウェン・ウィルソン）。現場監督（ヴィニー・ジョーンズ）を殴ってしまい解雇されるが、地元の判事であるウォルター（モーガン・フリーマン）が詐欺師としての犯罪歴を知りながらジャックに仕事を提供する。ホテル・オーナーの大金持ちの（レイゲイリー・シニーズ）の愛人、ナンシー（サラ・フォスター）にひと目惚れしたジャックは、彼女に近づいていく。レイ・リッチーの愛人でもある彼女は、ジャックにある儲け話を持ちかける。それは、ナンシーとジャックが手を組んでリッチーの賄賂用の資金２０万ドルを奪い、彼の鼻を明かすというものだった。
