Jet Li is the Black Mask. Michael (Li) was an integral part of Project 701, an experimental government program that created superhuman men and women and turned them into indestructible fighting machines. He escapes that dangerous world and instead works as a simple librarian, changing his name to Simon. But soon he is drawn right back in when his former master turns against the government that betrayed Project 701 and demands that Michael rejoin the squad to help carry out his evil plan to take over the Hong Kong drug trade. Directed by Daniel Lee, BLACK MASK is an action-packed comic book brought to life, filled with the requisite explosions, motorcycle stunts, black-and-white flashbacks, laser weaponry, killer CDs, and some major carnage. The terrific martial arts sequences were choreographed by the great Yuen Wo Ping, who was responsible for the fight scenes in THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON. Michael's final showdown with his former commander is electrifying--literally. Li's charming good looks and innocent smile lead the way in this exciting tale produced by Tsui Hark.

Don't get the dubbed (Artisan) version! Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
Granted this is not a good film by any stratch of imagination, but some parts of it are still enjoyable (in a guilty pleasure way). This version is cut to avoid a CAT III rating (because of the gore) so parts of it don't make sense; still I enjoy it because 1). the action (some people complained about the editing but as a trained martial artist some of the action is actually pretty cool) 2). it's stylish 3). Francoise Yip is hot 4). Lau Ching Wan and Karen Mok are great. If you watched the dubbed (Artisan version) and have some spare change, at least rent it and see the difference.

Li Lien Jie, I hope i spelled it correctly, was good with Lau Ching Wan. I wish they had done another to this. I hope one day they will work again, together.

I'm very disapointed with the fact that the dubbing was poor in some places and that this version is actually CUT!!! It's not the version I saw round my friend's house, if I'd know this from the start I wouldn't have bought this DVD from HK!

A dvd of good quality, the film is fantastic, the dts sound is powerful and the spectators won't get boring. A good Movie with our best loved dts sound, magnificent !

Black Mask - Not the Best Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I bought this film only recently, (region 4 version). Sorry to all Jet Li fans but whilst the action sequences were enjoyable, the appalling dubbing drops this film into the dirt. Why? For God's sake why? Karen Mok speaks flawless english and surely there are enough Cantonese or expat' caucasians that could've been hired in to do the voices for any actor that couldn't speak english. What's on the track is simply shocking, far from Tsui Harks best work and simply doesn't do justice to Karen nor to her co-stars. I can't even bring myself to watch this film again, at least not the R4 version.
