F4's Vic Chou reunites with Meteor Garden and Mars director Tsai Yueh Hsun for the highly anticipated PTS police idol drama Black & White. This ambitious big-budget buddy cop thriller teams Chou with heartthrob newcomer Mark Chao, the son of renowned veteran actor Chao Shu Hai who also appears in the drama.

Vic Chou plays against type as a mysterious danger-shirking playboy cop who cares more about scoring dates than catching criminals. After sleeping with his superior's daughter, he gets transferred to a different district, and paired with the craziest cop on the force. One a crafty slacker and the other a reckless hero, the two young cops with completely different values and work methods end up unlikely partners on a huge case that unveils a massive conspiracy involving the mob, the police, and politics.

Black & White co-stars top actress Ning Chang as a forensics expert and I Want To Become A Hard Persimmon's Ivy Chen as a mob boss's daughter caught between Vic Chou and Mark Chao. Sammo Hung's son Jimmy Hung of Tension pulls double duty playing an underworld boss as well as serving as the drama's action director. The Black & White supporting cast also includes stars like idol Kingone Wang, model-turned-actresses Sonia Sui and Patina Lin, and Hong Kong veteran Paul Chun.

This release comes with a two-compartment box with space for Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 disc set.

痞子，因為某種企圖，他被人從奇醜無比街頭流浪漢，改造為一個靠著躲子彈與無聊直覺過日子的警探。坐擁不合身份的名車與豪宅，每個月的戶頭裡還自動冒出數十萬的現金供他零花，當辦案膠著時，他就到街角的便利商店，買杯咖啡坐一坐，線索跟犯人的蹤跡，自然會送到他手上。他不用作太多事情，破案率卻極高…。他明白，這是他當警察的「附加條件」。如果他不幹警察，他擁有的一切便消失無蹤。他無法向任何人解釋這一切，就連他自己都莫名奇妙。慢慢的，他真的相信自己是個警探，而且與眾不同。

英雄，從小在養父母的教養下，相信正義與法律是建構世界的主力，但他因為身手太好，破案積極，所以每次追捕犯人，一不小心，就是飛車、跳樓、搏擊傷人的下場，他絕對是個好警察，只是積極過度總有寫不完的報告。破案率超高，但他的衝勁卻讓上司頭痛不已，對這世界來說，他是個真正的英雄，但普遍上的認知，他是個太過拼命的瘋子。

痞子與英雄在一場警匪追逐的混戰中，荒謬初會。當兩個人的槍近距離瞄準對方的時候，就註定他們既親近又矛盾的未來。南區分局裡第二次見面，英雄撂下狠話，不只不願跟痞子搭檔辦案，還放話：「限你一週內，消失在我眼前。」

這個南區分局，擁有全市最好的設備，卻也是罪犯最喜歡藏匿的地方。分局長，每天作升官夢。愛出風頭的陳組長、沉穩寡言的資深警察老李、從電腦駭客逮出來的高手浩克、崇拜英雄勇猛的女警小綠。當然最特殊的是，他們有一位美貌與才智同樣過人的犯罪學鑑識高手藍西英，卻每天只與屍體跟人骨為伍。

這是一個多事的春天，先是北韓的軍隊私下運毒，被南區分局查獲，轄區內的銀行不只整個保險箱庫房被洗劫，還有職員喪生。精通六國語言、擁有魔鬼特質與天使身材的國際女刑警雷慕莎介入調查，也完全打亂痞子英雄辦案的節奏。而這些都是痞子調進南區分局，和英雄合作之後發生的事，在這一整個春天裡，痞子和英雄像兩個瘟神般，他們到哪裡，災難就尾隨到哪裡。

警局之外，維持全市最重要的主力，正是黑幫三聯會，他們以自己的方法治理一個黑白不分的地下社會。當然，槍械、走私、賭博、高利貸，都是三聯會的事業範圍，而三聯會的首領，人稱老頭，卻與現任總統有著綿長深遠的交情。

老頭的第一千金陳琳，是個漂亮得像糖瓷娃娃卻有柔道三段功力的女孩，她不驕縱卻是個狠角色，初次見面就被她摔在地上的痞子，從此擄獲她的芳心。痞子有許多理由不理會陳琳的感情，然而正直又認真的英雄，愛上她，卻不需要任何理由。

痞子與英雄，這兩個冤家路窄的警探就此不小心推開了通往天堂的一扇門，那扇門把正義與邪惡連成一氣，龐大的權利與金錢，在門與門之間流動。而門後隱藏著一隻召喚著他們通往毀滅的手，從他們會面的那一刻起，所有的事，都緊縛著和他們有關的秘密。在這座迷霧城市裡，已經很久沒有人看見天晴。

Where there is light, there is shadow
Tsai Yueh Hsun, the director who put Taiwan idol dramas on the map back in 2001 with Meteor Garden, redefines the genre in 2009 with the big-budget buddy cop mini-series Black & White. As Tsai's most expensive and large-scale project yet, Black & White lives up to the buzz and then some extra. Black & White is undoubtedly one of the best Taiwan TV dramas I've seen, and certainly the most ambitious and exciting police drama the island has ever produced.

Set in a Chinese city where cops brandish American-style badges, Black & White revolves around its eponymous heroes, Chen Zai Tine (Vic Chou) and Wu Ying Xiong (Mark Chao), two police officers of vastly different personalities who get unwillingly paired together. Ying Xiong is a fearless firebrand hero who jumps before he thinks and leaves no room for compromise when it comes to crimebusting; Zai Tine is a rich and carefree playboy who plays it safe in the field, and solves cases with brains and intel. The Chinese title of "Ruffian and Hero" and the characters' names make the contrast crystal clear - Ying Xiong means "Hero" and Zai Tine is nicknamed "Ruffian" - as do their often monochrome attire; Ying Xiong is black, Zai Tine is white.

The setup is pretty much classic for a buddy cop drama, and Vic Chou and Mark Chao prove to be a compatible odd couple. In a major departure from his previous roles, sad-eyed heartthrob Vic Chou lets loose as a flippant, flirtatious, and crafty wise guy who would much rather play hard than work hard. Though he does return to tortured hero mode as his character's complicated backstory is slowly revealed, the role of Chen Zai Tine nonetheless marks a breakthrough for Chou. Mark Chao is, meanwhile, quite a gamble - and quite a find - for the production, a complete newcomer picked through open audition, and then given equal billing with one of Taiwan's biggest stars in the biggest TV drama of the year. Chao steps up to the challenge impressively, giving a suitably intense and convincing performance throughout the story's many, many turns.

What starts as two devil-may-care cops' investigation of a mysterious drug ring spirals and escalates in completely unpredictable directions to unveil a mind-boggling web of crime, corruption, and conspiracy that involves the triad, the army, the police, terrorist groups, and the top political leaders of the day. Every character is washed in shades of gray as multiple layers of secrets and hidden identities slowly peel away, making it nigh impossible to figure out who's who, and on which side. Plus there's that whole tangle of men-in-love brotherhood and romantic triangles, with both Zai Tine and Ying Xiong falling for the daughter of the mob boss.

Black & White becomes both increasingly intriguing and potentially alienating in the third act as the story storms bravely out to left field with all manners of twists and turns, some of which are pretty unbelievable if not manipulative. It gets difficult to see the light when Black & White takes both the protagonists and the viewers so deeply and unpredictably into the shadows, but the audience is also already so invested in the story at this point, it is easy to stay on for the emotional roller coaster and wild reveals. Certainly, it's hard to fault Tsai for narrative ambition, especially when everything is delivered with such thrill and excitement. Black & White does not skimp on the action scenes, packing in a fair number of fistfights, car chases, and shootouts choreographed by Sammo Hung's son Jimmy Hung, who also moonlights on screen as a baddie.

Jimmy Hung is less convincing onscreen than he is off, but he's just one of the many uncanny, inspired casting choices Black & White pulls off. Prior to Black & White, leading lady Ivy Chen had been in a couple of dramas, but she was still a relatively unknown commodity in Taiwan - though it's interesting to note that the role of the sassy mob boss's daughter was originally given to another newcomer picked through audition like Mark Chao, and Chen was actually cast at the last minute to replace the other actress. We can only assume that the casting row worked in the production's favor as the cute and petite Ivy Chen is one tough cookie in Black & White.

In comparison, Ning Chang gives a more understated, but no less effective performance as a quiet forensics expert with a strong and sweet demeanor. Supermodel-turned-actress Sonia Sui is a stretch as a femme fatale but she at least looks the part of the icy beauty. Other supporting cast members like Jason Tsou, Hank Wu, Huang Jian Wei, and most notably, Shiou Jieh Kai in a breakout performance leave very favorable impressions, while Kingone Wang pretty much debunks what's left of his pop idol image with a thoroughly creepy turn as a drug lord. And of course, you can't go wrong with veteran actors like Paul Chun, Chao Shu Hai (Mark Chao's father), and Jin Shi Jieh.

For Asian television, Black & White holds up as one of the most impressive of its genre with its movie-like production values and high-concept storyline. For Taiwan television, Black & White is pretty much the first and best of its kind. In another precedent, next summer Black & White finishes its story on the big screen. I, for one, can't wait to see it.

I really like Mark Chao, he is a new comer and excellent actor in this action drama. I bought this darma because of Mark, i like him so much but the story line little bit slow at the end
