The third DS game based on Kubo Tite's phenomenally popular manga and anime series, Bleach: The 3rd Phantom departs from its predecessors in many exciting ways. The first two Bleach DS games were fighting games, pitting iconic Bleach characters versus one another in single or two-player mode. The 3rd Phantom belongs to a different genre, the tactical RPG, and features a deep story and lengthy battles. The story of The 3rd Phantom is also special - instead of rehashing old Bleach storylines, it was written by Kubo Tite and fits into official Bleach continuity!

The game stars two new characters, shinigami from another time, who travel to the present day and encounter Ichigo Kurosaki and the entire Bleach supporting cast. Over 180 characters are featured in The 3rd Phantom, including many from the manga, TV anime, and animated films. Like other tactical RPGs, e.g. Final Fantasy Tactics, The 3rd Phantom requires players to maneuver around towns, talking to other characters and collecting information. When it's time to fight, the game switches to an isometric grid, with turn-based movement. When opposing characters are placed near each other, the screen switches to battle mode, which is seen in side view, similar to the Bleach fighting games. Battles are generally one-on-one, with each character possessing unique abilities and skills, but if an ally is located nearby on the battle grid, more powerful "tag team" moves are possible.
