Minor changes from novel

This is a surprisingly good quality 2001 production filmed in widescreen based on Jin Yong's (a.k.a. Louis Cha) novel "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" or "State of Divinity". It was produced by Zhang Ji-Zhong, who later made "Legend of Arching Hero 2003", the award-winning "Demi Gods, Semi Devils 2003", and the stylish "Return of Condor Heroes 2006". There were minor changes in the story for the sake of non-readers. For example, there was no mentioning of Ling-Hu Chong (main character) in the novel until 2nd chapter, where he didn't even appear but was rather described by gossips among his buddies. The series moved this part to the beginning. Instead simply being described by others, he actually showed up so viewers will be introduced to the lead character early on. IMO, this is a good move as with other minor revisions. Details of the ending were also slightly altered, but overall it's as faithful to the book as you can get. Major characters were portrayed well and very memorable, especially the villains. The cinematography is beautiful as with most of Zhang Ji-Zhong's productions. Some decent CG were used to enhance actions/visuals but they might seem cheap compare to the much higher budget "DG,SD 2003" or "ROCH 2006". It's definitely the best adaptation of Jin Yong's novel as of now. |

Top-Notch Show
| This is the first Jin Yong series I had ever watched and even after seeing most of the the recent new ones like Tian Long Ba Bu (Demi Gods Semi Devils), Yi Tian Tu Long Ji (Heaven Sword Dragon Saber) and She Diao Yin Xiong Zhuang (Legend of the Condor Heroes), this one remains my favorite. The cast is excellent and the fighting scenes are just awesome. I absolutely love the ending song as well. It just grew on me. |

Great Series
|
I bought this series in Beijing to help me with practicing Chinese. The scenery and scenes are beautiful. In addition, the music of the series is beautiful and matches well with the action. As my Chinese improves, I enjoy the series even more. I watched the entire series 5 times and have not tired of watching it. I find the acting to be very good for all the charaters involved especially that of actress who plays Ren Yingying. I can't wait to read the actual novel. |

Wonderful TV Series
| This is a really wonderful and entertaining TV series. One of the best I have ever watched. The scenery is absolutely breath taking. The cinematography was superb. The martial art director was amazing. Most of the times, I even forgot that these were actors who pretended to know Kung-Fu. It was that real. I read the book before, I can tell you the TV series is every bit as good as the book. The only weak point of the series is that acting in general except a couple actors is not strong. Li Ya Peng's acting ability was one of the good ones. What saved the day was the fantastic story line writen by the original author. The plot was so interesting that you can almost overlook some of the questionable acting. I was very very happy that I had a chance to see it. Now I want to buy it when the DVD becomes available. It is definately worth buying. |
