Professional Review of "Brave Karaoke (VCD)"

July 26, 2003

This professional review refers to Brave (Regular Version)

An Annual Release: "Brave" ~ Chang Hui Mei, A-Mei

Two years since A-Mei signed with Warner Music, this annual album "Brave (Limited Edition)" represents the superstar's most outstanding and brilliant move to date.

Nine months after her last album, A-Mei, of course, still sings as touchingly and movingly, as forcefully, energetically and powerfully as always.

Ten distinct, but equally tasteful and magical musical pieces are offered on this brand new album. Each offers the same skillful and stunning A-Mei.

And altogether they have brought the Asian music diva's musical career to a whole new horizon. Rather than offering quick tempo songs which A-Mei specialises in, "Brave" mainly offers songs that express emotional feelings and present her from a gentler side. Besides, fans will be flattered when their ears pick up the sounds of the significant musical breakthrough the superstar has achieved by introducing her first attempt at rapping.

As for the leading single "Brave" (Track#4), it is the Chinese theme song of the Korean network game "A3" and was rewritten from a Korean song, just like the second leading single "See Myself" (Track#1).

While "See Myself" is the better choice, "Brave" is still offered with a dainty and melodic rhythm, but lyrics of just ordinary and averagequality. The most outstanding points of "See Myself" are A-Mei's phenomenal performance and the perfect match between the stringed instruments and Wang Lee Hom's piano play.

"Why I Love You So Badly" (Track#6) is an ear-pleasing and beautiful love song. A-Mei's artistic, angelic and emotionally-charged voice gives full vent to the feeling of frustration in the song.

"Save Me From Embarassment" (Track#5) was written by Tanya. Regardless of whether it comes to the humming of afewlines in the opening, the mind-clearing and unconventional melody, or the way A-mei chooses to perform in the chorus, the song is definitely a heavily-Tanya-flavoured one.

As regards the significant musical breakthrough mentioned above, "Doesn't Matter" (Track#7) presents the breakthrough, in which A-Mei makes her very first attempt at rapping. She has also invited Steven Lin Zhi-wen, who is a member of "Machia", to conduct a special rap talk duet.

"Silly Words" (Track#8) is flirtatious, seductive and tempting. "For There Is Me" (Track#9) is a signature song of A-Mei's. It is not only strongly rock flavoured, but also a bit Reggae flavoured. Other pieces such as "Forget" (Track#10) and "Hypocritical" (Track#2) are also worth sparing your time to listen to.

Unfortunately, the most regrettable t thing on "Brave", which is A-Mei's yearly lone release in 2003, would be the lack of such startling beautiful pieces as "Nothing You Want After All", "Blue Sky" and "Bad Boy", which made their marks on her first shot. Hopefully the producers could pay attention to that for the 2004 yearly release.

Recommendations: "See Myself" (Track#1), "Why I Love You So Badly" (Track#6), "Save Me From Embarassment" (Track#5)

Great singer, great songs Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have long been a fan to Amei's music. Sometimes artists music quality tend to go downhill from there first album hit, but A-mei keeps it up. Her songs retain her awesome style and singing ability. Her voice is slightly raspy and sultry, captivating the emotion of the song. Her songs include those that are slow, easy-going, and intriguing. Amei's Brave cd is not a let down! I'm glad I purchased it.

Excellent album... thanks to Les from USA for providing a great description of A-mei's talents clearly evoked on this piece of work. A-mei is truly a diamond in the rough for the Chinese music industry in our generation and probably will forever be beyond this point in time. Her classic songs are timeless and her talents speaks to all ages. I just never ever get tired of listening to A-mei sing there's magic in that voice of her's. Truly God has blessed her with a voice and presence like no other. I can't wait until we get another slice of heaven from A-mei with her next release whenever that'll be (and hopefully it's soon). A-mei you are amazing!!! We LOVE you.

2004 MTV Asia Award Recipient Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
If ever there was a singer whose heart, soul, talent and passion were evoked into every song sung, that would be simply A-mei. Brave is just that, brave. Brave in which the essence of love and regret and hope are echoed into each persons heart that listens and is moved by A-mei's voice. It's one of the greatest albums that A-mei has come out with and continues to raise the bar on the standard and quality of music. From "See Myself" to "Forgotten", you're able to feel every emotion, tear and breath that A-mei exudes and longs for in her songs. Truly she is the best and bar non... the 2004 MTV Asia Award winner and rightfully so.

A-mei's entertainment is euphoric~~!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I think the title to this album suits her venture into new styles of music. A-mei is brave to try more and more things because she has a voice and personality that is very versatile. Her individuality is enhanced if anything, because you can still tell from hearing the ballads and uptempo songs like track 3, that it's A-mei singing that song. True, the songs are a bit different, more mainstream than her previous songs, but they are still golden. You don't have to be a "hardcore" A-mei fan in order to enjoy this album, because it is quite an excellent piece of work. If you enjoy good music, and a singer with amazing pipes and personality, this is the album for you and A-mei, she is the artist for you. You will find something so special and unique with her, I encourage you to get all her albums because each one is a musical and lyrical masterpiece. I simply cannot wait to hear more from A-mei... she is the greatest ever!

Amei's individuality seems to have disappeared with this album. She's just going with the trend that other typical Taiwanese female singers have also followed. Her slow songs are okay (Yong Gan, Wo Wei Shen Me Na Me Ai Ni) but her fast pop songs (Jia Xing Xing, Jiu Shi Wo Xiang Ni) are nothing memorable. Buy it only if you're a hardcore Amei fan and don't care about how good her songs are.
