YesAsia Editorial Description

Japanese cult filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa directs Bright Future, an offbeat, involving motion picture that defies all expectations and delivers something unique and entirely new. Yuji (Joe Odagiri) is a beaten-down twenty-something year-old who works at a washcloth factory with his pal, Mamoru (Tadanobu Asano). But they're not long for the job. Circumstances arise that place Mamoru in jail, and Mamoru's pet jellyfish with Yuji. Enter Mamoru's estranged father Shinichiro (Tatsuya Fuji), who runs a junk shop. Yuji goes to work for Shinichiro. A gang of high school thugs wearing Che Guevara t-shirts inhabit the local arcade. A entire family is nearly murdered. And a ghost appears to surprise Yuji while he's preparing to feed the jellyfish, which escaped into the sewers, and is starting to multiply! And those are only a few of the disturbing, frightening, unusual, and even strangely beautiful things that happen in Bright Future! Kiyoshi Kurosawa imagines a bizarre tapestry of images and events that feels both disconnected and brilliantly realized. An off-the-wall portrait of disaffection and miscommunication in modern Japan, Bright Future ultimately delivers what its title suggests - in more ways than one!

Professional Review of "Bright Future (Normal Edition) (Japan Version - English Subtitles)"

August 27, 2003

Everyone needs a goal in life, and that of Mamoru (played by the very tasty Asano Tadanobu) is to adapt his red medusa jellyfish to fresh water and set it free. A lovely goal, except for the fact that the things are highly poisonous, and he wants to liberate his in the waterways of Tokyo.

But despite what the director says, this is not a monster film. There are no giant red jellyfish lurching out of the canals to menace children and tear down buildings, no screaming, car crashes, or evacuations of a city under siege (I feel as though that should be in capitals, with plenty of exclamation marks, but I'm going to resist the temptation). The jellyfish serves largely as a device to connect characters, aside from some lovely shots of the creature in its moodily-lit tank.

The personal relations in this film seem, to me at least, fairly realistic. They're messy, uncommunicative, and tend to change in odd ways. And there's never a classic, end-of-film-so-we-can-all-go-home-happy resolution, because life just ain't like that.

Overall, this film holds up a subtle mirror to life, allowing us to identify with, and sympathise for, the lonely and dysfunctional main characters, while providing occasional moments of beauty that we don't see in our own lives. Or perhaps we don't see them because we're too busy looking elsewhere. A thoughtful and moving film.

Beautifully told Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
At first Bright future can seem quite inaccesable to viewers, especially due to the strange fluctuations in plot speed, but if given the right amount of attention this film shows itself to be a delicate, subtle and rather beautiful story of love, loss and devotion. Asano Tadanobu is as always, understated and Odagiri Joe provides a sweet, emotionally unstable balance to his performance. I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes a good tear-jerker.
