"Lady Snowblood" with Chinese characteristics
|
The premise of "Broken Oath" is based on the Japanese revenge flick "Lady Snowblood". Indeed, the opening scenes are almost carbon copies of the early scenes of "Snowblood". But this version of "Snowblood" adopts a much looser, much lighter approach to the Japanese original's revenge storyline. Angela Mao plays Lotus, the child of a man murdered by four hired assassins and a woman who died in prison after she sought to kill one of the assassins. After being raised in a Buddhist nunnery, Lotus now is ready to follow her fate: to put to death those responsible for the deaths of her parents. Interestingly, Mao is less indominatable in this role than in her other action films. Fortunately, she finds friends willing to come to her aid in pursuit of her relentless mission. There are fights galore in "Broken Oath", many of them of very high quality (although a couple of Miss Mao's fights obviously are speeded up). While character development isn't a big part of this movie, it still manages to deliver a number of interesting good guys and bad guys. I hope that some day this film is released in a remastered version; this release is pretty grainy. Also, some of the English subtitles in the early part of the film are a bit mangled. Nonetheless, the film looks good; it appears that the filmmakers had a sufficient budget to give it a Shaw Bros.-quality appearance. While I eventually became benumbed by all of the film's fight scenes, I truly enjoyed this film and will watch it again and again to see Angela's terrific pole-fighting techniques. Recommended for action fans. |

Vengence: her name is Angela
| Initially, I got this DVD because of Angela Mao & was worried about this older kung-fu movie. Wow, I was thoroughly impressed & got to see Lam Ching-ying, Sammo Hung as extras as well as others sprinkled through-out. The plot of course is your typical revenge plot but a little more plotting & kaniving on the characters' part in order to accomplish their tasks. The fighting was actually pretty impressive as well & will entertain any old school Kung-fu movie junky. The film was clean, subtitles clear & the only thing dated about this film was the infamous, semi required "booby" scene of movies in that era & the classic "clapping" sound effects. Angela sure is wicked with a pole! |
