YesAsia Editorial Description

In his first film shot in the US, Japanese director Takeshi Kitano stars as Aniki, a stoic "yakuza" (the Japanese version of the Mafia) who heads to Los Angeles after his clan loses a mob war. Unable to speak English, he still manages to take control of his little brother's small-time gang of drug dealers and quickly moves them up the criminal ladder by impassively blasting all their higher-ups and imparting an Eastern sense of honor to the new "family." Between the ritual suicides, tortures, self-mutilations, and blood-soaked gun battles, Aniki forms a special bond with black gang member Denny (Omar Epps), who teaches him some English slang in exchange for guidance. As with Kitano's previous films such as FIREWORKS, VIOLENT COP, and SONATINE, an overall sense of Zen stillness contrasts with sudden macho eruptions into violence. The film takes a uniquely Japanese look at the male psyche, which makes it nicely comparable to the works of Takeshi's American counterparts like Peckinpah, Tarantino, and Abel Ferrara. Offbeat and strangely subdued, BROTHER still delivers all the desired gangster goods and should make new Takeshi fans out of anyone who has seen SCARFACE or THE GODFATHER.

"...[Kitano] returns to more familiar form with a vengeance..." - Glenn, Kenny (Premiere/Entertainment Weekly Critic), Premiere, 05/01/2001

"...BROTHER boldly juxtaposes images of geographical displacement and transience with underlying themes of cultural permanence and immutability..." - Mark, Kermode (Sight And Sound Critic), Sight and Sound, 04/01/2001

"...Tense, edgy and compulsively unpredictable....This is Kitano's GODFATHER..." - Alan, Morrison (Total Film Critic), Total Film, 04/01/2001

"...The supporting, mostly Japanese cast is effective, particularly Kato..." - Frank, Scheck (Hollywood Reporter movie critic), Hollywood Reporter, 10/03/2000

"...Mr. Kitano's scenes with Mr. Epps have an intriguing give-and-take..." - Elvis, Mitchell (New York Times Critic), New York Times, 07/20/2001

"...What's fascinating about Kitano is the way he pounces. He specializes in moments of action almost too fast to see..." - Roger, Ebert (Critic and screenwriter), Chicago Sun-Times, 07/27/2001

VERY GOOD Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I really like Takeshi Kitano. His movies are all with combination of drama and action. In this film, because its in America, she seldom speak but everytime he talk, is with a combination of humor. Great movie. Worth buying!!

good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is actually the first movie I've ever bought online and at the time i loved it so much it became my favorite..This is a must buy for any gangster head like myself who loves gangster films. Marcus Epps and Tak have great chemistry in this movie. Not a very long movie and moves very quickly which i didn't really like. Overal, great buy

Brother – Japanese version – Running Time & Motion Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This film is a special favourite of mine, understated & well paced. As far as the film itself you will find plenty of reviews, if it is your taste you will probably love it too.

Hearing that there was a large difference between the uncut & cut version I looked & found this. Assured the running time was 144 mins I bought it.

Be warned the running time is 108.42 mins (1hour 49 min) without credits.
Now incase you are looking at your version & reckon it is nearly 4 mins shorter again be warned. I have run this version next to my old copy (film four version) and there is NO EXTRA FOOTAGE. The UK version just runs a bit quicker. I suspect that the film four version (white cover) is the uncut version at 104.20 mins or 108 mins as it says on the box. So both are the same version....almost.

The footage is the same BUT here are two considerations for this Japanese version:

+ If you are Japanese or understand fluently, the subtitles can be completely switched off. (Film four version when off still translates the Japanese; as the Japanese version will not translate the English speech when on English subs).

- The Japanese version whether viewed at 720 or 1080 resolution on a plasma screen suffers greatly from motion blur – horizontal lines. This is most annoying BUT does not seem to be a problem when viewed on an 18 inch LCD PC flatscreen. The picture also, by comparison of version, seems not as sharp and possibly a little darker.

Rate: Film 9/10 – Japanese Version 6/10

Hope this helps.

Takeshi-esk Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It was a pretty good gangster film with some wicked scenes. This actually showed me how a life with a gang can lead to a deadend. You'll love the scene with the chopsticks.
