The first box-office hit for Ozu in Japan, The Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family anticipates the later masterpieces such as Tokyo Story and The End of Summer. After the death of the father of an upper-class family, his wife and daughter has to struggle to survive. Tensions arise when they moved in with a married son, so they continue to move around from one household to the next, but they are always unwelcomed. When her youngest son returns from work in Tianjin, he scolds his siblings for their selfishness.

Ozu's classic on filial duty

"Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family" must be the most Confucian of director Ozu Yasujiro's films, being essentially an essay in fictional form on the duties that children owe their parents. The movie tells of the travails of the Toda family. After the patriarch of the clan passes away, the family discovers that he died deep in debt. They must sell the family home to cover the debt, leaving Mrs. Toda and Setsuko, the family's youngest daughter, without a home of their own. They are taken in by each of Setsuko's siblings in turn, but the siblings feel cramped and unhappy with the imposition of having their mother reside with them. Eventually, Mrs. Toda and Setsuko end up living at the family's worthless, run-down seaside cottage. Setsuko's brother Shojiro returns from Tianjin, China, for the anniversary of Mr. Toda's death and discovers the state to which his mother has fallen. He rails at his siblings and asks them to leave the post-anniversary family dinner. Shojiro then asks his mother and sister to live with him in Tianjin and they accept, grateful to have a son (and brother) who is willing and eager to take them in. To close the film, Ozu lightens the mood with a comic sequence in which Setsuko asks Shojiro to marry her best friend and his shyness causes him to flee when the friend comes to visit. Ozu uncovers some hard truths about our selfishness in this film. The movie was particularly affecting for me because my own family recently went through a similar episode. Consequently, I know from my own experience that Ozu has dealt honestly and faithfully with his subject matter. I have downgraded this DVD slightly due to the spotty quality of this print of the film. Every ten minutes or so (I assume at the beginning or the end of each of the film's reels), there are a few moments (and at one point a few minutes) during which the quality of the film's sound and image are disrupted. Nonetheless, I recommend this excellent film very highly. |
