時は天保十三年。水野忠邦による天保の改革は、庶民の生活を日増しに窮屈なものへと変貌させて行った。そんななか、犯罪長屋で母親と二人暮らしをしながら役者を目指す直次郎は、とある遊郭の花魁・三千歳と知り合う。一方、猿若町界隈に掛かる芝居小屋では、河内山宗俊が、体制を批判して役人に追われていた三文小僧を救い…。
河竹黙阿弥による「天衣紛上野初花」（くもにまごううえののはつはな）をベースに、アングラ演劇の雄・寺山修司が脚本を、「心中天網島」の篠田正浩が監督を担当した異色時代劇。歌舞伎ならではの様式美や躍動感をふんだんに取り入れ、犯罪長屋に暮らす6人のアウトサイダーたちを中心に、"かぶきもの"の生きざまを描き出す。出演も仲代達矢や岩下志麻など、豪華な顔ぶれ。特典として予告編が収録されているほか、ライナーノートが封入されている。
