A horrible film Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
The director Jingle Ma has been a competent commercial director with films like tokyo raiders, silver hawk and even seoul raider and playboy cops were all enjoyable albeit passable, but this film is just plain horrible. the direction is pedestrian and predictable and no time does Ma injecting any tension or passion into the film.

Charlene Choi mugs the screen constantly with her cutesy wide eyed look reach the point of being annoying. Wu Chun fairs slightly better but thats not saying much, he is very wooden and cant carry a film but i guess he is there for all the girls that go gaga for him.

As for the martial arts, they are average at best with Jingle Ma useing a lot of slow motion distracting from the enjoyment. The end fight scene is poorly executed and by the time the audience reaches the end they just do not care about the characters.

The only saving grace of this picture is the presence of a brief cameo from Fan siu wong, who has a well choreographed fight scene that is the highlight of the film.

This customer review refers to Butterfly Lovers (2008) (DVD) (Taiwan Version)
Language Version Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Could anyone tell me if this version is the Mandarin version and voice is dubbed by Wu Chun himself or Charlene herself? I am afraid of getting the China Mandarin dubbing version. I always prefer the original people with their own voice.
I have seen the Cantonese version on the big screen and was disappointed with Wu Chun's Cantonese.
Please help!

Yes... this is what im talking about!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First time for me to see Wu Chun in a movie like this..

He should do it more often. His body built fits his role pretty well. I love the story although the ending is sad, it also turn out to be happy as they died together. This film is something to own... really. Go get your own copy and i assure you that it's not a waste of money.

Good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Recently, Hong Kong kept producing pointless films. However, this movie has a storyline. Yes, it's not orginal because you can tell by the title. This movie is like the old version of "Butterfly Lovers" plus "Romeo and Juliet." Charlene's acting has gotten better, but she is acting like herself again (outgoing and tomboyish). Wu Chun's acting is not bad. This movie is worth to watch.

The old version was 10 times better Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I bought this movie because I absolutely loved the old Charlie Yeung/Nicky Wu version. With this version, I was hoping for a more fresh, young appeal and was greatly disappointed. Why Charlene Choi? She can't act. Worst of all, the girl can't even cry. The storyline deserves better than this. It's such a haunting, beautiful tale and it was all ruined by poor acting skills, poor editing, poor everything. The only thing I enjoyed was Wu Chun's beautiful face.

Don't Waste Your $$$$$ Customer Review Rated Bad 0 - 0 out of 10
This movie is so pathetic that even my 7 year old son left in the middle of the movie to go play his video games instead. Horrible acting by Charlene Choi (get a acting tutor) and the visual affects were really cheesy. Wow, if this is what Hong Kong movies have to offer nowadays, then it deserves to go downhill. I'm putting this movie away. Will never watch it ever again (why should I put myself through torture again?) and is a movie that is forgettable and regrettable! I should have spent the money that I spent on this DVD on food or gas instead. Don't make my mistake!

Ponderous retelling of familiar story Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
In "Butterfly Lovers", Charlene Choi plays a young woman dispatched to a martial arts school by her parents. However, the school does not accept female students, so she must pretend to be a man to gain entrance. At this, Miss Choi is entirely unconvincing. As a martial arts student, she remains thoroughly girlish, with lots of playful and put-upon pouting. At the school, she falls in love with Big Brother (Wu Chun). But back at home a young man she has known since childhood pines for her and, when he learns that a romance has blossomed between Charlene and Big Brother, he imprisons Charlene's parents to blackmail her into marrying him. Will poor Charlene agree to a loveless marriage to free her parents?

The filmmakers who produced "Butterfly Lovers" must have anticipated that it would be the ultimate date movie: a stirring romance to make the girls dewy-eyed and lots of spectacular swordplay to keep their boyfriends entertained. Younger viewers may be satisfied with these elements. The film contains some striking imagery and a couple of genuinely affecting moments (one of which, blessedly, comes at the film's conclusion). However, director Jingle Ma left both subtlety and pace out of his cinematic vocabulary when he made this movie and, as a result, I found "Butterfly Lovers" to be a plodding, pretentious overcooked pudding of a film.
