This bitter-sweet comedy recalls two pals' search for love from their university days in the 50's maturity in the 70's. Late 40's, university students Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) and Sandy (Art Garfunkel) share not noly the same room but also the same girl to whom they lose their virginity. After having an affair with Jonathan, Susan (Candice Bergen) refuses to confess the relationship and opts for the "safe" route by marrying the more stable Sandy. Years go by, Sandy is eventually fed up by his monotonous normal life and marriage whereas the hedonist Jonathan becomes angry and bitterafter numerous short and meaningless affairs which occasionally lead him to impotence. Soon he meets a sexy kitten, Bobbi (Ann-Margret) who soves his impotence problem but triggers a more serious one - the pressure of commitment, marriage and child. On the other hand, Sandy begins switching between different girls. When the two meet again, Jonathan coaxes Sandy into the idea of mate-swapping... Whose approaches to love lead to a happy-ending? Jonathan's? Sandy's? or none of the above?
