All that glitters is not gold ...

CASSHERN is the kind of film that you really want to like, despite some tremendous inadequacies in the plot, pacing, script, etc. A tremendous breakthrough from Japanese cinema, CASSHERN offers everything that any die hard film fan could cherish: a multi-layer, action-intensive plot backed by top-notch visuals that, in many cases, defy definition as well as expectations. The film looks like a million bucks ... but, sadly, that's all it does.

While CASSHERN promises to deliver some huge bucks in premise, it only manages to muster strength in the first half, giving way to a second half weighed down by the conventions of taking a relatively mainstream concept -- good versus evil -- and pigeonholing an all-too-predictable message of the art-house set in the conclusion.

Hint: if your point can be made in a few sentences, then what's the purpose of a 140 minute film?

However, CASSHERN is the kind of film that's easy to relish in its strengths: the visuals are, pardon the pun, to die for; the hero is well worth the worship; and the effects push the envelope when compared to anything else put out by Japan previously so far as I'm concerned. It's good bad that all that glitters isn't gold; if it were, CASSHERN would've been the mother lode.

This is a great movie. The best way to describe it is it's like an anime with all the detail of live action. This movie makes aggresive use of its budget and the tools available to it. It has style and attitude and manages to implement all sorts of visuals perfectly. It's not the sort of cinematography you get to see every day, and it's amazing. Some people say the plot isn't smooth enough. Well, anyway you look at it, it leaves most Hollowood productions in the dust.

I'm from England and having watch a "copy" (ahem), I found this film nothing short of amazing - after seeing the trailer on the net, you were led to believe that it was an all-out action movie. But it turned out to be more, much more. It had scenes who's imgaination more than rivalled that of the matrix, with the painfull tradgey's of love and war, the look and feel of the movie is awe inspiring and heartbreaking. People talk about good and evil in this movie but as you watch it you find yourself guilt ridden and trying to pick a side - after all is there a good or an evil or just two sides that wanting the same thing? Can there be a winner in war? There are a lot of visual devices that you can find in numerous anime inclding metropolis and the final fantasy games. But don't fret because this is not a re-hash. This is an original pure breed japanese extravganza - that you will never forget. whether your a fan of japan or not. It will leave you speechless. This film dones not waste time back loggin a spoon feedng you plot lines just dumps you stright into the emotional conflict. Hollywood don't make 'em like this and probably never will - quite easily missed by our western island but totally impossible to forget - if you havn't seen it you are sadly lacking ;-)

After watching this DVD with no idea what it is, I decided to to find out as much as I could about it.

CASSHERN depicts a grim future with a war ravaged Earth trying to survive. There is the obvious good versus evil theme throughout the film. There are overtures and symbols relating to Nazism, Frankenstein and METROPOLIS. Some things in the film are not well explained (like the lightning thing, the hidden fortress thing and the robot thing) so having some advance "intel" on this DVD would make this more enjoyable.

After some research, the director is a fashion photographer and music video director. This is his first film. His sense of style, fashion and music co-ordination with certain scenes is quite evident throughout the DVD. Visually, this film is artistically intriguing. However, if you watch enough movies, especially METROPOLIS, you'll note that this sort of thing has been done before. The CGI is decent but it's really nothing to write home about (expected eye candy, nothing innovative or out of the ordinary).

CASSHERN is a fantastic futuristic story of good pitted against evil. Much work and time was put into many scenes to show the dark, grim realities of this fantasy future. I'm just not sure if 141 minutes of this to tell a story of good versus evil is a good way to spend your time (whether you watch it with no idea what it is or research it and then watch it).

Even though I fell asleep somewhere during the second half of this DVD, this film has it's moments. It's just not for everyone.

This movie is insane!! (In a good way) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw this while I was in Japan over the summer and even though my Japanese is rusty, and it was nothing like the series, it still rocked! I have been waiting with bated breath for this release and here it is...any who have not seen it must see it, you may want to check out Ju-On too, it is the Japanese movie "The Grudge" was based on...the Japanese are coming out with great movies and I hope they keep coming...

Stunning! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Casshern is about Tetsuya Azuma, a man destined to live twice. The movie starts off with a meeting held with Dr. Azuma, Tetsuya's father, presenting his theory on "neo-cells." He explains that it can rejuvenate any part of the human body. His project turned out to be a failure until an accident occurs in his lab. Mutant humans are created and they hate mankind. It is up to Casshern to stop them from world domination.

Whilst this movie was supposedly on a low budget, there is such great cgi that really shines. The action scenes really get you going. I was amused by the hard riffs played during a particular scene. All in all, this movie was nothing short of what I expected.

Final Score: 8/10

AMAZING IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! If you have not seen this film, then you haven't experience a true definition in sci-fi movies. The attention to details and graphics has made the best of modern western sci-fi films look like cheesy 50s sci-fi. I am not a major sci-fi fan but this film has left me DROOLING for about 4 weeks now,a MUST buy DVD!!

Most likely you'll like it Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Overall, this is a good movie, everything is looked at in detail from graphics to storyline, but i think they focused too much on the storyline. Plain and simple, everthing is good, except the slow pacing due to the deep storyline and there isn't as much fighting scenes as expected or needed for this film. Im an anime fan, so when they made this movie, i thought they would actually focuse a little more on the fighting scenes.
