Beach, ocean, sunshine, and the summer of sixteen wash pleasantly onto shore in the 2006 surfing feature Catch a Wave. This lively youth film is based on a bestselling novel written by Toyoda Kazuma when he was only 16 years old as a documentary of his high school summer. Toyoda himself also adapted the novel into the film's screenplay, ensuring that the story stays young and true to spirit. Catch a Wave marks the feature debut of director Takahashi Nobuyuki who did the film editing for classic J-horrors like Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water, and Retribution and co-directed the popular television drama Water Boys. Teen stars Miura Haruma (Koizora, 14 Year Old Mother), Kimura Ryo (Heat Island, Nodame Cantabile), and Hamada Gaku (Ahiru To Kamo No Coin Locker) play three high school boys who find more than they expect in an unforgettable summer of romance, friendship, and surfing. Catch a Wave also features television star Sakaguchi Kenji (Pride), Kato Rosa (A Cheerful Gang Turns the Earth), and character actor Takenaka Naoto (Nodame Cantabile).

Now that school's out, high school friends Taiyo (Miura Haruma), Kosuke (Hamada Gaku), and Seito (Kimura Ryo) are eager to get away from the city - not to mention their parents. They plan to spend their summer at the beach, but on the first day of arrival, the bumbling boys have already managed to lose their house keys. Fortunately, they meet strange old surf shop owner Duke Kawahara (Takenaka Naoto) who takes them in and recruits them to work at his shop in exchange for surfing instruction. And just like that, the three boys have found a new goal for their summer - to Catch a Wave at Shonan Beach.
