高畑勲を中心に少数精鋭のスタッフが5年の歳月をかけて自主制作した傑作アニメ。

宮沢賢治の有名な原作を高畑勲監督をはじめとする少数精鋭のスタッフが5年の歳月をかけて自主制作した傑作アニメ（1980年公開劇場作品）。セロ弾きの青年・ゴーシュが真夜中の練習中に様々な動物たちと交流し成長していく物語を、実力派スタッフが様々な作品の合間にコツコツと作業を続け、音楽と映像が融合した美しいメルヘンに仕上げた。全カットの原画を一人で描き上げた才田俊次、背景画をほとんど一人で仕上げた椋尾篁、そしてベートーヴェンの「田園」を中心とした間宮芳生による音楽が、名匠・高畑勲のもとで一体となった。スタッフの作品に対する愛情が感じられる、まさに後世に残すべき傑作である。1981年度毎日映画コンクール・大藤賞（アニメグランプリ）受賞作品。
今回は、2000年8月にリリースされた同作品を、大幅にプライス・ダウンしての再リリース。
