Directed by Kwak Kyung Taek, the 2002 film Champion revisits Korea in the early 1980s and shows one man's struggle to lift himself out of poverty and turn himself into a boxing champion. The film is based on the true story of legendary boxer Kim Deuk Gu. Starring as the Champion is Yoo Oh Sung who previously garnered acclaim for his turn in the blockbuster Friend. Teaming up with Kwak for the second time, Yoo gives an intense and arresting performance that captures the spirit of Kim Deuk Gu.
The story of local boxing champion Kim Deuk Gu has been told many times. He was a country boy who seemingly had no hope for the future. Sports knocked at his door, and with the determination to fulfill his dreams, he moved to Seoul. Korea was hoping for its next boxing hero when tragedy struck. In a match for the World Lightweight title, Kim Deuk Gu died due to a blood clot in his brain. Since he was at the top of his game, his death made him a legend in Korean sports. The consequences of his death are still felt in boxing circles all over the world. Some of the changes in today's boxing world have come as a result of Kim Deuk Gu's tragic end.

1982年11月14日，金得九應世界冠軍拳手Boom Boom邀請往美國拉斯維加斯參加挑戰賽。拳賽未開始時，全世界的觀眾以為金得九會很快被Boom Boom打倒，但全球的觀眾都驚訝金得九的表現。可惜，在第十四圈的賽事中，金得九昏倒在擂台上………
Kim was born in a poor family. After leaving home at his age of 14, he wanted to become a professional boxer. After a few trials runs, he is put in the ring. Kim is soon reborn as an incredible fighting machine. After numerous trials and tribulations, he wins the Asia-Pacific Championship and gets engaged to Lee Kyung-mi. Kim promises to make Lee the wife of a world champion and enjoys the best moment of his life.
Meanwhile, the world boxing champion, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini packs Kim as his opponent for the second match. On November 14th 1982, Kim finally enters the ring to against Mancini. While most of the bets are on an easy victory for Mancini, Kim proves them wrong. Kim's physical prowess along with his steely determination surprises everyone including his opponent Mancini. But in the 14th round, Kim collapses and goes into a coma.

After the highly successful Friend in 2001, this year, Kwak Kyung-Taek and Yoo Oh-Sung returned with another extraordinary drama - Champion. Although Champion was not able to surpass the superb box office record of Friend, being one of the highest grossed local films in Korea this summer, it is still a well polished work that is worth some recognitions. The story of this film is based on Kim Deuk-Gu, the former Asian champion boxer. His legendary life is turned into an intense drama. Every significant moment of his short but fruitful career is covered. In addition, a little portion is dedicated to his love encounter. The plot is very rich and intact, even though the ending is supposed to be a tragedy, we would not feel too miserable, it is because the objective of the story is not to make you cry, but rather to promote the positive attitude of a man who never gives up. If you have seen Friend, you would probably agree with me that Kwak Kyung-Taek is a realist filmmaker. His film does not have too many dramatic twist, drama gradually unfolds through a collection of ordinary yet highly sophisticated events. The focus is always about the complex human interactions while the emotions and personalities of the characters are constructed in a genuine and intimate way. Moreover, the cinematography is refined and delicate, every image is placed at the right place without a flaw. Luckily, Champion inherits all of these traits, which results in a very engaging viewing experience. There are quite a number of characters in this film, however, only one person, that is, the protagonist Kim Deuk-Gu, is the focus of the filmmaker. Everything is centered around him, his "exterior" encounter and inner struggle are depicted elaborately. The character appears so lively that viewers can actually feel his emotions intimately as if it is a real person staying with them. Certainly, without the excellent performance by Yoo Oh-Sung, the creation of the character would not be complete. Yoo is a diligent actor. It is obivous that he has spent a lot of time to train up his body and learn boxing. The outcome is rewarding. He has transformed himself into a real boxer! Lead actress Chae Min-Seo is fairly new in the industry, her performance is impressive even though she does not appear too much in the film. Cinematography is carefully planned as expected. Kwak Kyung-Taek recreated the early 1980s period of Korea convincingly. No matter the building or the costume, everything is taken care of to the smallest detail. The boxing scenes are also visually stunning. The filmmaker employs a documentary style to capture the action of the boxers, that is why the fights look so real and dynamic. Moreover, the timing is well calculated that you wouldn't find any of the fight scenes to be too long or dry. Champion is not a fast-paced action film and it is very different from Hollywood boxing classic Rocky in which there are tons of dramatic twist. But it doesn't mean it is bad. English subs not timed correctly

The Korean and Chinese subs work great but the English subs are a few scenes or more out of place. There is dialog when nobody is talking at times. The movie was great and inspirational though. |

About champion
| This film was very very good that I have to recommend it. In the beginning, you might feel that it is slow in some ways, but the way he was brought to be great champion for boxing which was portrayed in the movie, slowing down was necessary. It will make you think about how you should do best in your field, as living for one day out of your life. |
