Renowned writer Huang Yi's popular swordplay novel Chen Sheng Yi has been adapted numerous times, but the most memorable version is the 1979 Hong Kong television adaptation from RTV (now ATV). Aired in early 1979, Chen Sheng Yi (or Sam Sing Yi) was released the same year as the Huang Yi-penned TV classic Reincarnated and features much of the same cast and production team. Divided into seven stories over 16 episodes, Chen Sheng Yi stars Reincarnated hero Norman Tsui as titular rogue swordsman Chen Sheng Yi and top actress Ma Man Yee, in her first period drama, as one of the infamous Thirteen Assassins. The drama's star-studded extended cast includes Nora Miao, late actor David Lau Chi Wing, Poon Chi Man, Mary Cheung, and Candy Man Suet Yee.

Chen Sheng Yi was planned and produced by Stephen Siu and Johnny Mak, who combined for many of RTV's most classic dramas including Reincarnated, Fatherland, Crocodile Tears, Gone with the Wind, and Dragon Strikes. Johnny Mak went on to become a Golden Horse-winning director with Long Arm of the Law, but he wasn't the only future Hong Kong Cinema mover and shaker to work on Chen Sheng Yi. A young Ching Siu Tung (Hero) served as the action director for the drama, and the theme song was performed by a newcomer named Leslie Cheung.
