Professional Review of "Cheon Sang Ji Hee First Single - Too Good"
|
Legendary Korean record company SM Entertainment is responsible for some of Koreas biggest pop acts such as S.E.S., H.O.T., and Shinhwa. They now try to repeat their previous success by bringing together 4 singers with pop music experience into quartet girl pop group Cheon Sang Ji Hee. What comes together seems promising, but lacks a certain something that will set them above the crowded Korean pop market. The single starts off wisely with an a cappella rendition of Elvis Presleys Cant Help Falling In Love. The producer obviously wanted to first highlight the groups vocal talents with a well-known song (Hong Kong artist Janice took a similar route for her debut as well). The gamble pays off as their rendition proves they have vocal talent, and the single is now ready to begin in earnest. The first original song on the single is Boomerang, the Korean adaptation of an English song. The song brings a good amount of energy with the heavy arrangement one can expect from a Western pop song. The result is an energetic start to the proceedings as the group passes yet another important stage of being a true pop group: delivering fast songs. But after this, everything begins to collapse. The single reaches the third track with the title ballad Too Good. Performing ballads can make or break a pop group, and it shows with Cheon Sang hi Jee. The problem here, however, isnt the group itself, but rather the choice of song. Both ballads in the single suffer from the safe pop formula, and when done badly, they simply sound like a mishmash of previous Korean hits. In the end, the single starts promisingly, but eventually sinks into the crowded sea of Korean pop without making much of a lasting impression. This doesnt mean Cheon Sang Ji Hee is a complete failure though. After all, the group does have the looks and the talent to make it in the industry (having a majority of the members being experienced pop singers doesnt hurt either). While their debut offering isnt spectacular, these four young girls may yet prove themselves in the future. By Kevin Ma |

It really is too good.
| Although it's a single, the picture book accompanied with it makes up for the price. All of the songs grow on you (if for whatever reason you don't like it off the bat). Their first song is a variation of Elvis Presley's "Can't help falling in love" (sung in a cappella) and is what drove me to purchase this CD. They've been called the "female version of DBSK", but they've got their own sound and style. All of the members are quite pretty too (especially Stephanie). If you like artists like DBSK or BoA, you'll like this group too. |

| Well, I didn't like their rendition of "Can't Help Falling In Love" but in general, it was okay. Their voices in "Boomerang" went a little too high for my liking, and there were too many voices going at it for me to fully enjoy this track. I liked the instrumental of it though. But the other two songs, "Too Good" and the one after that (I don't know the English title to it) are really good. They were well-balanced and catchy. A pretty good single. |

Really "Too Good"
| This female quartet is off to a good start. With their amazing acappella skills and looks they can make it to the top. Every song on this single is good and if you enjoy listening to a female group that can actually sing and is not just based on looks, this single is for you. Plus, this single has already won 2 awards. Its sad how an excellent single's rating can go down because of an anti fan that tries to disguise her identity and gives the single the lowest possible rating multiple times. |
