Still beats the pants off other Japanese artists.

Compared to some of the overproduced tripe coming out of Japan, Aiko still shines with her neo-garage sound. The instrumentation reminds me of her early indie work, which I consider her best. But her vocals seem to have lost the intensity she had on early hits like Ashita and Hanabi. This is not to say the CD is not worth having. Track 1 is very reminiscent of the Astral Box sound, and track 3 is tons of fun to listen to. My opinion is that the tendency towards overproduced sound in Japanese popular music is limiting Aiko's vocal creativity on recordings. It is my sincere hope that she does a "garage days revisited" type album in the near future, and gives us the intensity and depth of emotion that we expect from an Aiko CD. If you are looking to add to your Aiko collection, by all means pick this one up. If you are looking for an introduction into her style, I'd suggest Sakura no Toki or Chiisana Marui Kojitsu first. |
