YesAsia Editorial Description

From the filmmakers that brought us An Autumn's Tale and The Soong Sisters comes City of Glass, an masterfully shot, wonderfully acted romance that received a record twelve nominations at the 18th Annual Hong Kong Film Awards! Director Mabel Cheung Yuen-Ting and writer/producer Alex Law Kai-Yu deliver an unconventional, double love story that takes place both in the past and the present day. The film kicks off with a fatal car accident in London which claims the lives of Raphael (Leon Lai) and Vivian (Shu Qi), both from Hong Kong. However, the two were not married to each other, but in actuality, carrying on an affair that has its roots in the distant past. Upon their deaths, Raphael's son David (Daniel Wu) and Vivian's daughter Suzie (Nicola Cheung) head to England and soon piece together the truth about their parents.

It seems Raphael and Vivian were young lovers who eventually became separated by political ideology and geographical distance. Even so, their love somehow endured, drawing them back to one another in their golden years. Meanwhile, back in the present, Daniel and Suzie begin to develop a relationship of their own, as the film seamlessly moves backwards and forwards in time, concluding at the 1997 handover ceremony.

Through the metaphor of a love story, Mabel Cheung and Alex Law are able to explore the tumultuous, yet hopeful relationship between Hong Kong and China. But that isn't to say that the film skimps on the actual romance. Elegant and enthralling, City of Glass is one critically-acclaimed romance that earns its reputation!

City of Glass Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What does that movie title mean? Doesn't seem to match the movie, I thought. However, charismatic Leon did a pretty good job and I also have to agree that casting Shu Qi was the wrong choice. Daniel Wu gave a reasonable performance as a rookie and am glad he actually spoke good English, without the chinese accent, no offence.

This is a sad love story of 2 young uni students who fell in love at first sight, had a strong relationship, got involved with student/political sit-ins and protests (back in the 60s and 70s very popular). Through it all, Leon was jailed for a short stint although he kept in touch with Qi. In order to fulfil his ambition of being the best architect, upon relase from prison, he left for London to complete his studies. Long distance relationship does not always work and they drifted apart. They met up again by chance in Hongkong years later, now both married. However, their love for each other has never really ended and they found themselves embroiled in an affair, even having a joint bank a/c and buying a house in the outskirts for their rendezvous (possible only because Qi's husband, also a ex-uni classmate of Leon, a successful businessman is out of town a plenty and Qi felt lonely; whereas Leon's wife (whom he met while in London as a struggling student) and son (Daniel) lives in New York. At a student reunion, they decided to call it quits for they realise their spouses will eventually discover their affair. Both went their separate ways, although their hearts are telling them otherwise. Leon returned to London just before New Year's eve and Qi found herself going to London to 'drift and recapture what had been and what could have been'. Leon spotted Qi while driving past, both eventually had to admit that they can't live without the other and decided to ring in the New Year together with a drive to London (Big Ben). Fate dealt a death blow when the car skidded and crashed and both died.

Both families discovered this affair only when Daniel and Qi's daughter were sent to collect their parents' ashes. As the siblings sort out their parents legal stuff (as they shared a joint a/c and a house), they discovered why this was no ordinary fling for both their parents and even discovered that their Chinese names were exactly the same (Qi named her daughter and Leon named his son - Cam Bow, a name which uni-student Leon picked to name should he ever build a famous bridge). The story ended with the good prospect that Daniel actually started to fancy Qi's daughter (and vice versa). The music score is romantic and haunting.

Die-hard romantics, this is for you!

another leon movie with shu qi. don't like the pairing of them. don't think they make a good looking screen couple. the story is good. about two students fall in love and got separated due to circumstances and politics. later in life they both marry different people. they meet again by fate and have affairs. later their spouses find out in the most horrible way. the story is good and interesting.

Romantic Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This is a very romantic movie which revolves round the concept of fate and true love. The plot is very interesting -- however it is leaning a bit more on the fairy tale side. Recommended for hopeless, fateful romantics like me.
