Based on Miyagi Ayako's novel, Cobalt Blue stars popular actress Nagasawa Masami as a young woman who is overwhelmed by despair and depression after her fiance's sudden death. The film follows her touching emotional journey, revealing how her first love came to be and how she copes with the shocking loss. Stage actor and former Johnny's Jr. member Rachi Shinji makes his film debut as Nagasawa's boyfriend. Fukishi Seiji (Oppai Volleyball, Your Friends) plays her childhood friend, while Sasaki Kuranosuke (After School) portrays her father. Directed by Nakagawa Yosuke (Starlit High Noon), Cobalt Blue is set in Okinawa, providing a picturesque backdrop for the bittersweet turns of life and love.

A unusually bad Okinawan film
| I saw this film at 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival. Talk about disappointing film. No coherent plot nor any human connections were established in the film. Usually good Ms. Masami Nagasawa is totally "not in" this film. I don't blame her in that more and more of her films- she plays the same doomed or partially doomed heroine. I mean she is a talented actress, whose talent is getting wasted on these same "junsui ai" (pure love) films. Kuranosuke Sasaki does his best to save this film, but to no avail. This film like the heroine was doomed from beginning to due to poor script, no connection to Okinawa and her people, and just bad acting or lack of good acting by the cast. This is one bad Okinawan film. |
