Soulmates Single
Dong Bang Shin Ki's "Soulmate Couple" Jae Joong and Yoo Chun offer some hope and music in the midst of the controversy with their new J-pop single COLORS ~Melody and Harmony~. All five members of Dong Bang Shin Ki have tried their hands at songwriting, but Jae Joong and Yoo Chun are thus far the two more notable composers of the group, and they further confirm their talents with this very agreeable self-composed release.

Composed by Jae Joong and Yoo Chun, COLORS ~Melody and Harmony~ ranks among the higher echelon of Dong Bang Shin Ki ballads. The title very much reflects the song, which has an almost lulling quality to its easy-going melody, light beats, and gentle harmonization. COLORS ~Melody and Harmony~ is certainly soft, fuzzy, and motivational enough to be Hello Kitty's 35th anniversary image song. The chart- and heart-friendly track is catchy but unassuming, giving it high replay value, and Jae Joong and Yoo Chun's comfortable vocal performance and harmonization are spot-on.

The single's second A-side Shelter unfortunately hasn't gotten much plugging, but it's a great song with more ambitious designs than COLORS ~Melody and Harmony~. Composed by Jae Joong and Jun Su, Shelter comes out stronger in melody and arrangement with an R&B dance tune, distinct beats, background vocals, and prominent rap sections. The angsty love song builds from a mid-tempo R&B composition to a dramatic, uptempo, multilayered beast. Yoo Chun's self-penned rap sections are particularly surprising, shifting from low and soulful in the first verse to strong and pointed in the second as the song grows in volume and emotion. The outstanding arrangement by Jae Joong and h-wonder effectively carries the track through many tonal and musical transformations.

Although fans would no doubt prefer to have all five guys singing together, Jae Joong and Yoo Chun also make a great project duo as they complement each other very well both in singing and in songwriting. As a side rather than a TVXQ release, COLORS ~Melody and Harmony~ and Shelter allow them to experiment more with different vocal arrangements and compositions and to grow as singers and songwriters, which will ultimately make TVXQ even stronger in the future.

Creative Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I agree strongly with the review S. left on this single. The songs certainly have a soulful quality outside of the current trend, but I'd expect no less from our Soulmate duo. ^^

When it comes to the album art, I must says that it's really nice. Instead of paged booklets, they come with a simple 3 folded booklet that contains the lyrics and 3 pictures (Jejung and Yuchun together and then the individual shots). I simply love the photography of this single. ^_^

'COLORS~Melody and Harmony~ (5:20)' seems to have come out at exactly the right time. With so much despute going on, this is just the right uplifting song we fans need to calm our weary hearts. The message behind the song is obvious and rightfully so. You don't have to dig deep to feel its love.

'Shelter (5:43)' is simply amazing. Despite the amusing Yoochun-lish raps, the composition is really well thought out. I find myself even listening to the Less Vocal version a lot. This song is also a bit straightforeward in its message and so far, listeners can't seem to get enough (and I'm one of them). The mix of rain, piano, cello and chimes is nice and theit vocals are a bit light in the sense that you'd think it'd echo. Also, the rap goes well with the flow of the song which is rare in such ballad-like songs. Also, Jejung and Yuchun's vocals near the peak of the song are simply amazing (at about 3:47). The vocals are so strong.

Overall, this is an outstanding single in terms of composition, creativity and vocal strength. Jejung and Yuchun are very talented muscians and I'm looking foreward to more of their compositions in the future. 10/10 ^_^

It Has Soul! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Just watched the DVD last night before I write this review. The first track, Melody and Harmony has a simple but catchy melody, a song that is easy to remember. It has soul, apart from many songs that's been popular lately. Both Micky and Hero are excellent singers, and musically talented as well in my opinion. They care about music and possess the natural born abilities to compose. They would not have been able to produce this track if they don't have the musical talents and the underlying emotional desire. The mv in the DVD is simple: A better world with beauty and harmony, the message that they convey in their title song. The mv is not very sophisticated, but you get the message anyway.

Vocally, Melody and Harmony is not perfect. Micky's voice fits perfectly in the track and Hero's voice is slightly high pitched. The synthesizer sound in the track can be improved or removed because it is somewhat artificial. The (less vocal) track gets a 4 stars rating.

I think a lot of listeners will prefer Shelter. It gets a 5 stars rating after I upgrade it. Hero sounds his normal self, while rapping and everything else are good.

I also bought the CD version. The only difference is the length of Melody and Harmony has increased to 6:47 min.

Please support Micky and Hero who are fine musicians in the making. I wish them success in whatever they pursue, and also hoping they will perform again with the rest of the TVXQ members in the not so distant future. Love from their fan! :)

Love it ^^ Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
JaeChun's Colors~Melody and Harmony single is perhaps one of my favourites of all their singles. Colors is a beautiful song, easy on the ears, and you can never get sick of it. It has this gentle melody to it, and the blending of Soulmate's voices are just wonderful ^^ I've been addicted to that song since they first sang it at the Dome.

Shelter on the other hand complements Colors. It's more intense, and it has his sexy feel to it. Yoochun's rap in Shelter is just love ^^ Shelter is both dark and light...the melody gets dark...then it gets light, and I simply love it. Not to mention that Jae and Junsu composed it together. ^^ Jae's voice is simply epic in both Colors and Shelter, and Yoochun's voice is sexy.

I can't wait until I receive my copy ^^

Talented Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Like most people, I've been upset about the dbsk hiatus, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the amazing music Yoochun and Jaejoong (and Junsu for "Shelter") have created. Yoochun and Jaejoong's compositions and arrangements are fresh and catchy. Vocally, Yoochun excels at rapping and soulful singing, while I'm left in awe by Jaejoong's amazing voice. Even when his tone gets a bit nasally, he still manages to make it work. (He's had one of my favorite voices ever since "Insa".) Both he and Yoochun are an excellent team (These are the bffs *Soul Mates*, of course.) ♥ Regardless of whether they're you're favorite members or not, I hope you'll give their music a chance and support them in any way you can. The cd is definitely worth it. :-)
