Released in 2004, Jay Chou's fifth album Common Jasmine Orange, or Qi Li Xiang, is a quintessential work from the Taiwanese superstar. This chart-topping album comes with familiar sounds and pleasant surprises, continuing Jay's signature style which have by now become a genre unto its own. After dedicating his fourth album to his mother, Jay pays musical tribute to his grandmother with the sweet "Grandmother" (Track 4). There are catchy R&B-rap fusions like "My Territory" (Track 1), "General" (Track 5), and "Chaotic Dance of Spring and Autumn" (Track 7), fast-paced, tongue-twisting numbers that are distinctly Chairman Chou. And no Jay Chou album would be complete without his touching ballads, including the dramatic war-themed rap ballad "War Ending Wounds" (Track 10), karaoke favorite "Excuse" (Track 3), and of course the titular Common Jasmine Orange (Track 2), a soft, romantic love song with image-laden lyrics.

This reissue of Common Jasmine Orange comes with a DVD containing the music videos for Common Jasmine Orange and "War Ending Wounds".

Top Quality Work, as always Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I was astound by Jay's superb musical gift & daring attempts in defying the traditions in Chinese pop music industry when he first released his debut album back in 2000, and I've purchased every Jay album ever since. There's no doubt that Jay Chou's incomparable composition, passionate vocals, innovative singing techniques, and sophisticated lyrics have all remained unmatched & unsurpassed in the Chinese pop-music arena, not to mention his unparalleled talent & mastery in piano, cello, and a number of other instruments. Those audiences who don't honor Jay Chou for the credit he deserves, apparently they have misinterpreted the true motive & meaning of music. Jay’s music is a medium for communication regardless of language barrier; it’s something that nourishes the mind & soul. Furthermore, Jay’s music covers such a diverse range of themes with worldly concerns such as war, urbanization, domestic violence, cultural pride, drug abuse, family relationships, racial discrimination, etc., which is much more matured & superior in comparison to other main-stream singers who only produce songs revolving around superficial love between boy & girl. Those who heavily criticize Jay for his mumbling singing style are truly over-looking the most important aspects of music (i.e. the composition, the vocal power & technique, the messages hidden within the music) and are simply too obsessed with what's considered "proper" in conventional Chinese music & conventional Chinese male vocals. (By the way, vocal qualities such as Jay’s are very much favored in other cultures) In other words, those who think Jay’s music is nothing more than mumble-jumbo are really stuck within the confines of tradition and refuses to explore beyond the boundaries for new possibilities. Ironically, a lot of complaints about Jay's mumbling singing style come from those who cannot understand/read/write the Chinese language, which I find to be very pathetic.

 Overrated disposable hip-hop Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
Whereas it is true that this album sets a landmark in style for oriental music, it doesn't help that Jay struggles to sing, mumbling in Mandarin at times and talking in overdubs that he might as well be singing in Hokkien.

Interesting to see how others think he is creative - I find his album derivative, borrowing everything from his English language fraternity who are more hip at doing this kind of specialist music than Jay Chou.

Everything about this album is overrated, including Jay's carefully placed cosmetic scars and military schoolboy pretence.

Initially appealing, however superficially decorated bland pop songs scribbled and dubbed in the current fashionable trend. Best avoided.

I was curious about this man and his music when I read in some magazines saying he's the best male singer in Asia and seeing some good reviews about this cd, so I decided to give it a try. And oh, what a GREAT mistake I make. He sings or rather murmers barely audible enough for the listener to hear. Had to strain my ears and look at the lyrics. The music is okay but the voice destroy it all, should make a instrumental album instead. I would not recommend anything by this guy, have to say it's my great misfortune to buy this cd.

Maybe I'm too much of a critic, but this album just did'nt meet my standards. Yes, i agree it was good, but i felt he could do even better. Personally, i prefer his previous albums, i loved the songs an hao, an jing, kai bu liao kou and shi jie mo ri, just to name a few. However, i still enjoyed listening to his music, especially tracks 2,3,6,9.

This cd is absolutely great!! It's Jay's best work yet. All the songs are great, it's hard to pick a favorite off the album! I think Jay is the best! He's creative, and his songs just keep getting better and better!! Jay, you rock!!
