Director: Peter Chan
In 1986, Li Xiaojun comes south to Hong Kong from Mo Sek, his home town, to seek refuge with his aunt and sells chickens for a living. He becomes acquainted with Qiao, who came from Kwongchow, in a fast-food shop. To earn commission, Qiao introduces Xiaojun to a private school for tuition in English. The two of them gradually get to know each other well.
Whenever Qiao needs to earn some extra money, she will definitely ask Xiaojun to help. Xiaojun is innocent and kind by nature. He only hopes to save enough money to marry Fang Xiaoting, his lover in his home town. Qiao, on the other hand, wants to become a career woman. Initially, their ambitions are not the same. But because Qiao loses her investment in a stall in the lunar New Year's Eve bazaar, the two lonely hearts unexpectedly come together and begin an unexpressed love affair.
Recommended by a friend, Xiaojun changes his job to become an apprentice chef. On the other hand, Qiao begins to engage in speculation. She loses all her savings in the 1987 stock market crash and has no alternative but to become a massage girl. She then comes to know Brother Pau, a triad member. Feeling that her love for Xiaojun will not bear fruit, Qiao becomes Pau's mistress. In 1990, Xiaojun finally manages to bring Xiaoting to Hong Kong and they marry. On his wedding day, he meets Qiao, who now has a successful career. Although they initially suppressed their feelings towards each other, their love finally flames again.
But when they are prepared to be re-united, Pau has to flee Hong Kong because he has committed crimes. Qiao is unwilling to leave Pau alone and flees with him. Feeling that he is unworthy of Xiaoting's love, Xiaojun parts with her. This, together with the death of his aunt and his friend, makes him decide to go to a Chinatown in the United States and become chef. In 1993, Qiao and Pau arrive in New York through many places. After being robbed, Pau dies in an alien country. Qiao, at a loss for what to do, continues to live alone in the United States. Two years later, Qiao and Xiaojun meet for the third time when they are in the street, stunned by watching the news of singer Teresa Tang's sudden death...

Professional Review of "Comrades, Almost a Love Story"

Far too many punters insert the word "action" after "Hong Kong", and only define the territory's output by flying kicks and boiling lead; while many mainstream filmgoers might turn their nose up at Hong Kong films for exactly the same reason. Peter Chan's romance Comrades Almost a Love Story bucks all such trends, being equal to the greatest dramas from any country. Maggie Cheung and Leon Lai feature as Mainlanders who have come to Hong Kong; she wants to get rich, and he is just happy enough getting by. The film is scored to the much-loved music of Chinese songstress Theresa Tang, and indeed her life and death become central to the events of the film. This is one of the great Maggie Cheung performances, although that's a hard list to narrow down; but her determination to succeed however and wherever drives the film, and the POV shots from her ATM stick in your mind forever after when you're plugging in your PIN code and peering hopefully at the green LED readout. The greater surprise is Leon Lai. Often accused of being a bland actor, here he shows again that he is capable of an impressive turn in the hands of an impressive director (in fact, for an actor much dismissed, he still manages to feature in three of the greatest Hong Kong films ever - Comrades, Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels and Johnnie To's A Hero Never Dies). He provides a counterbalance, someone who has come to Hong Kong not for himself, but to raise money for his marriage. Also look out for ex-pat Aussie Chris Doyle in a rare in front of the camera role as an English teacher. (The film was shot by Jingle Ma, who does a job worthy of Doyle himself.) The search for the perfect life takes the characters far afield and over a few years, from China to Hong Kong to New York, from together to apart from that-would-be-telling; yet over this scope, the film is filled with so many moments of perfect intimacy that it stays with you forever. 10 homesick Chinese tunes out of 10 by Mark Morrison - heroic-cinema.com |

| a simple love story but very well directed. It has a good ending that is a flash back when the two first came to HK going their separate ways, but run into each other several times, indicating that these two were fated to be together. |

To me, a great movie does not require great dialogue. The body language and facial expression tells it all in this movie. The script and soundtrack round off a perfect cinematic experience. Oh yea, although the hard subtitle and lack of menu may turn off the more technically inclined, but to me that just brings back nostalgic feelings of the past. Must watch with your loved one. |

| This is an extremely touching and also funny movie dealing with love and all it's complications. The immigrant experience adds to the depth and beauty of the film. |
