Comedy, pole dance..and sighs!

As romantic comedies go, this is one fine and very funny movie. With two good main cast leads with Richie Jen and Fan Bing Bing and the lovely Kate Tsui, this also has a feel good ending to make it an all round entertaining watch. Lots of 'carry on' type humor and naughty innuendos, too, which there are many good instances of these here. To outline the plot, banker executive Fat's well to do conservative parents are a bit choosy about what sort of girl Fat should settle down with. And the fact that his present lawyer gal Rachael is a bit too far along the liberal Westernized bandwidth (and speaks her mind a lot), Fat fears that his father will reject Rachael, when they are both requested to visit Fat's parents on Chinese New Year. So, Fat sets up an idea that he will temporally employ a girl to pretend to be his girlfriend (the contract lover of the title), and instructs her to be as sexy, liberal, and forthright as possible - so that after the contract lover has done her stuff, and then Fat visits his parents with his real girlfriend Rachael, the latter will seem like the proverbial sweet buttercup in comparison. So for the contract lover, enter Joe (played by Fan Bing Bing - who most likely will encourage your eye balls to pop out of your head, if you are male viewer), a recent University graduate who is a bit short of cash and only makes ends meet by teaching English at a prep school in Beijing. Along with with her male dancer friend Alex, she spots Fat's advert for the contract lover, and takes the job. What follows, is a sort of My Girl / Carry On set of scenarios where Fat's wealthy land owner father (who also teaches traditional Kung Fu to students there), is led to believe that Joe is Fat's actual girl friend, and Joe constantly attempts to make him think she is a sex mad, over Westernized liberalist, who wants him to reject her. Unfortunately for Fat, things don't go quite to plan, and Fat's father and mother begin to take an usual shine to Joe, with extraordinary results. Even when (maybe because) Joe tries to get Fat's mum to seduce his father! Some of the funny situations that happen as Joe tries 'not' to impress Fat's parents, are memorable. She teaches Fat's mother and sister to become more seductive, by getting them to dress in skimpy clothing and/or showing them pole dancing (an aspect of drama dance at Alex's dance school). At one point she gives Fat's sister, Ting, a pole dancing DVD to practice with, but Ting accidentally by mistake, puts the disk into the martial arts school training session DVD player that Fat's father had previously set up, and then all the trainees, (thinking that the master is always correct by new facets of the fine art of training), begin to do 'pole dancing martial arts'! One to see, this! Although, not one to practice if you're silhouette can be seen too easily behind a curtain at night time. Joe even at one stage does a Sadako, as she is actually trying to pretend to look like she is drug dependent, but gets a sock in the chops for her efforts. Also, with some feigned sighing incidents between Fat and Joe, that nearly gives Fat's deadpan looking aunt a turn for the whose (who is actually quite funny in this as a straight none speaking role part), are some of the crazy shenanigans going on here. I liked the bit where Fat's father, being the traditionalist, paints the decor of his palace / house (its a big place) gold, due to his traditional movie preference for "Curse of the Golden Flower" and having the floor painted black after watching the film "The Banquet". (After Fan Bing Bing does her stuff, its probably Desapo Girl, now!) Although this is a predictable romance comedy, its charm and humor should keep you pretty well happy throughout, and the ending is all on a positive note. Very funny at times and considering that this features a Chinese New Year theme - a good one for the celebratory moment. |
