Based on a Shandong oral legend, Cow revolves around a peasant who puts his life on the line to protect a cow during the turmoil of the Sino-Japanese war.
Hardy farmer Niu'er (Huang Bo) has been assigned by the army to take care of the village's Dutch dairy cow. Though he's not so enthused with the task, he takes it close to heart, and a great bond slowly forms between him and the cow. Even after the entire village gets wiped out, he stubbornly continues to protect his dear companion, fending off Japanese soldiers, opportunistic thugs and hungry refugees alike.
