Both Li Lihua and Li Jing were beautiful. Li Lihua impressed me with her fighting movements, quick and agile for a woman her age and a non-martial artist too. She cut and thrust her sword convincingly. The rest of the supporting cast did their job ably. This is a well-executed film, moving at a comfortable pace all along.

January 28, 2006 Award-winning actingVeteran Li Lihua is so versatile and her roles are limitless. Her performance as Empress Wu should win her an award, displaying such ruthlessness necessitated by hers and her country's survival. Watching the last few movies of hers, I appreciate the wide range of characters she undertook. Her compassion and gentleness in Goddess of Mercy, her victimized characters in both Between Tears and Smiles and Three Sinners, all played to excellence. This is beauty and talent combined. The young generation may not know about her but the opportunity is here to appreciate the enchantment of past years.
Empress Wu is an epic production of director Li Hanxiang who seriously could do with a better script. Li Lihua could act her heart out but without support of a great script, the film lost some lustre.Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -

This is a short love story, originally planned as part of a 4-story movie, but presumably the idea was shelved. The great acting by Li Lihua holds this movie together. October 15, 2005 An old story made good by an excellent cast.The photography was clear and sharp despite being in black and white. This movie was littered with cameo appearances by Shaw stars, but the main cast did their job well. Veteran Li Lihua played two parts, the latter role was unfortunately not given much screen appearance but was sucessful in portraying a rich and frivolous girl as a striking contrast to the role of the poor and timid songstress. It is a joy to see Gao Bao Shu, Auyang ShaFei, Ivy Ling Bo, Guan Shang, Jiang Guan Chao, Wan Hao, and many others in this star-studded film. Did you find this review helpful? Yes (Report This) -
August 13, 2005 Bravo!
Vicki's voice has improved tremendously in this cd. There were a couple of 'shaky' notes in her singing in PIAO, but this DOUBLE is flawless. Her continued efforts have resulted in a perfect album. Now all she needs is to concentrate on improving her acting style. She was wonderful in her early dramas (HZGG and QSSYMM) but somehow in some of her movies she seemed 'subdued' and sometimes minus a spark, charisma, and almost a lack of energy. Veteran Li Lihua 'emoted' hurt, anger and despair so expressively which a younger and lesser experienced actress would find it hard to emulate. I particularly enjoyed the last opera segment.
