Based on Kenneth Pai Hsien Yung's groundbreaking 1983 novel, the PTS drama Crystal Boys revolves around gay youth coming of age in 1970s Taipei. Aired in 2003, Crystal Boys generated huge buzz in Taiwan for its grand cast and production values, and for its frank depiction of gay culture and relationships on television. The drama's popularity launched its young leads into stardom, and helped start off Taiwan's trend of mainstream gay-themed productions with handsome young actors. Fan Chih Wei (My Best Pals, Miao Miao) stars as the brooding hero, along with Tony Yang and King Chin who would go on to star in Formula 17, and Joseph Chang of Eternal Summer. Crystal Boys won Best Drama, Director, Actress, Art Direction, Sound, and Lighting at the 38th Golden Bell Awards.

Gay teen Ching (Fan Chih Wei) is expelled from school after being caught kissing a male friend (Tony Yang). Kicked out of the house by his father, Ching seeks refuge in the shadows of New Park (now 2-28 Peace Memorial Park), the center of Taipei's gay community. He stumbles into a circle of gay youth, each with myriad problems of his own. Forming a makeshift family, together these crystal boys strive to come to terms with themselves and their loved ones, while coming of age in the hustle and flow of Taipei's underground gay scene.
