Wow
| This film is really amazing. Deserves to reap all the awards they got. The costume and the acting is really something. I also like the sotry... no boring action. Jay Chou .... you rock. Real different from his Initial D role. Great actor, great singer. This movie you should make sure you get a copy. |

A very colorful film.
A very colorful film.
| This movie, i think it's not worth it to buy. I recommend to rent it first at any video store before purchasing. The only thing i like about this film is that the director did a great job filming, a lot of colors and beautiful scenes. The storyline itself is simple. It just a big family problem that the king have and they each reveal their secret as the movies rolls on. Not many action scenes. |

Great Visuals and Scenes but..

The visuals were magnificent (except women during that time didn't wear cleavage revealing clothing) and the fighting scenes were amazing. However after seeing the whole movie - I was surprised that it led to an abrupt disappointing ending and I ask myself "what's the point?" I remember Zhang Yimou had a film called "To Live" which displayed how communism affected the lives of the Chinese people. That movie was obviously banned in China. Then I notice movies like Hero and this ... perhaps which have the message that "one cannot rebel or try to overthrow the king." Maybe it's a subtle message. |

Stunningly beautiful film
Stunningly beautiful film
| Zhang Yimou pulled out all the stops in making one of the most ravishingly gorgeous movies I've ever seen. The plot is a tale of palace intrigue so complex that I didn't fully understand it until I heard Chow Yun Fat describe his character in the "Making of..." extra feature on this DVD. The acting performances in this film are riveting. I can give this movie no higher compliment than this: I'm eager to watch it again. Very highly recommended. |

watching from the commerical/previews..thought this movie would be quite action-packed..with lots of fighting and drama but after watching..it's not quite as i expected there were not a lot of fighting scenes in the movie..but the scenes were well filmed..i can see lots of hard work and effort was done into making it very profesisonal and skilled..and i can see jay chou's hard work paid off too..cause he does put out a great performance in the fighting..really surprised me from his usual singer side the acting were quite good..jay chou's acting wasn't too expectional though..but can't blame him since he's not born w/an acting talent..but it's slowly improving from inital d..hopefully his next movie would be better but overall..the movie is a little bit slow..many quiet scenes...the outfits really surprised me too..never really expected people in the olden times would wear their outfits like that the plot overall is a bit stupid to me..there were a lot of drama/tension between families and their secrets, lies and evil planning..but the overall picture..is about the empress..having an affair w/one of the king's son..then the king wants to poison her..the empress knows and plans a revenge..and some more shocking events on lost family members..etc etc..it's gives a typical soap opera plotline..and the ending..quite unexpecting..i won't spoil it..but it's just consider an unhappy ending overall..the movie is not as great as i thought it would be..there's just a big production involved with many famous actors/actresses involved..using many glamorous outfits+sceneries |

Good movie, but not Great
|
This movie is not as good as Hero or House of Flying Daggers. It was OK. Great custom, scenery, etc and the fighting was also well-done. I was expecting a much better movie than this. |

a worth watching film
| Decent story line, well acting handled by great actors & actresses, spectacular cinematography, breathtaking scenes and costumes design .... all of those under a well-spent budget to deliver a worth watching movie not only at the theater but also to own it on DVD. I think Zhang Yimou has shown his respect by such dedication to all viewers around the world !!! |

Good movie
Good movie
| This movie was better than I expected it to be but it probably isn't worth watching over again. I liked that there was a lot of suspense in the movie and at the end, everything comes all together as Prince Jai's army charges toward the palace. The whole set was very attractrive to the eye and there were amny bright colors. Jay Chou's acting was not bad for a beginner. The storyline of the movie was pretty decent. I think overall, this was a good movie. I would buy it. Also, the song Chrysanthemum Flower Bed by Jay Chou was very nice. I would buy the CD Still Fantasy. Golden Armour was also a good song. |

Overproduced, overacted mess
Overproduced, overacted mess

Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower represents the pinnacla of Chinese epic filmmaking; it's loud, garish, melodramatic, and downright silly. It's difficult to find much to like about the film. Taking Cao Yu's original play and transplanting it to the Tang (or late Tang) Dynasty for no other reason than to outfit the women in Victoria's Secret-esque attire strips the film of meaning and power. The production design, making use of pschedelic colors and outlandishly ridiculous designs, does nothing more than transform ancient China into some rejected Disney theme park add-on. The soap opera storyline and overstuffed performances generate more laughs than suspense or emotion. Poor Gong Li, who hasn't had a good film in almost 10 years, is reduced to playing second fiddle to her cleavage, spending the film trembling, crying, getting angry, then trembling some more. The rest of the actors/actresses fare no better. No standouts emerge as everyone chews up their scenery as though they're forced to act at gunpoint. With this film, Zhang Yimou has cemented his status as a once-great director. His complete and total reliance on spectacle makes for films that are pretty to look at yet say absolutely nothing. "Gold on the outside, rot and decay inside". Rather than summarize the plot of the film, this statement more accurately describes Yimou's repeated attempts to win that elusive Oscar. Better luck next time. |
