YesAsia Editorial Description

My Sassy Girl director Kwak Jae Yong heads to Japan for his latest romance with a quirky twist Cyborg She (a.k.a. Boku no Kanojo wa Cyborg). A charming fusion of romance, comedy, sci-fi, melodrama, and whatever else the kitchen sink has to offer, Cyborg She follows the burgeoning romance between an ordinary college student and his sassy love interest - who happens to be a time-traveling cyborg with superhuman powers. The film stars two of the most popular young talents in Japanese entertainment, heartthrob Koide Keisuke (Koizora, Kisaragi) and television starlet Ayase Haruka (Ichi, Hotaru no Hikaru), as the hapless boyfriend and magical girlfriend on an unpredictable journey through love and time.

Jiro (Koide Keisuke) is just an ordinary college student with the most mundane of existences until one day "She" (Ayase Haruka) shows up. With her large unblinking eyes and silver bodysuit, She walks into his lonely life and heart on his birthday, and turns his world upside down. A cyborg from the future, She was sent back in time by her creator, Jiro of the future, to protect present-day Jiro from a shooting that would have crippled him for life. For Jiro, having a beautiful, if slightly rough cyborg around is mighty handy, as She uses her super powers to save lives and get Jiro to class on time. Jiro gradually falls in love with this cyborg who develops human emotions, but She knows something about the future that he doesn't.

Love among the ruins Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Let's set aside the fact that the film's title is inapposite; the title character is a robot, not a cyborg. Let's also set aside the fact that the movie bends the space-time continuum in ways that break its own rules for time-travel. And that, in one scene, the movie may have forgotten whether Ayase Haruka, who plays two different characters, was in her human mode or her robot mode. And that, while some of the movie's humor is laugh-out-loud funny, other attempts fall flat. The bottom line is that I found "Cyborg She" thoroughly enjoyable; this is film-making with heart.

College student Jiro (Koide Keisuke) meets a strange and lovely young woman and immediately falls head over heels in love with her. Unfortunately, after their one brief evening together (which coincidentally happens to be the birthday of both Jiro and the girl), she tells him that she has travelled to his age from the future and she must now return there. One year later, Jiro returns to the restaurant at which they dined in hopes that the mysterious girl from the future also will return. And she does (or so it seems). Now, however, the mysterious girl reveals that she is a robot. And so begins a delightful, engaging, harrowing, and uplifting tale, a tale that successfully marries an awkward teen romance (just like real teen romances) to a heroic disaster epic.

Ayase Haruka is remarkable in this film; she is, of course, exceptionally beautiful, but she also gives strikingly distinctive performances in both of her roles. Koide Keisuke keeps the film grounded by delivering a believable performance of an average guy thrust into extraordinary circumstances. "Cyborg She" takes the time to create characters about whom the viewer comes to care, then places those characters in a situation that truly tests their metal (pun intended). It left me thrilled, dazzled, and slightly crazy for a certain lovely robot.

A brilliant twist! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I first watched this movie when it was screened in the theatres. Not expecting it to be the "most" fantastic movie, i was totally blown away by it when i came out of the theatre.

The story starts with very casual, funny and light-hearted plots - how the girl met the guy, how a cyborg influences the most 'boring' guy in his daily life and how a cyborg settles into the uncertainty of a unfamiliar lifestyle, though with a tinge of sadness when 'he' explains the reason why the cyborg is there for him.

Story soon starts to pick up pace and move into darker storyline - how the male lead couldn't fall in love with a cyborg and the Tokyo earthquake disaster etc.

Towards the end, i seriously thought it was going to be a sad ending, but through the careful and brilliant sequencing of the scenes, it really took me away!

Personally, apart from the twist at the end, I feel that what make this this movie so good are those little but cute and funny scenes weavering in and out of the entire movie. The casting of Koide Keisuke as Jiro and Ayase Haruka as the Cyborg is also brilliant as they both perform extremely well in portraying their characters.

This is a highly recommended movie for movie-goers who enjoy a little sci-fi, romance, comedy and - an unexpected twist.

Rating:85/100 Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I just watched this movie last night. I think that Koide Keisuke and Ayase Haruka were well chosen for their roles and they both did an excellent job. Koide as the dorky nerd is very realistic and lovable. I also like Ayase a lot because of her cuteness and looks. The movie is flawed in that the director spent too much efforts on the earth quake scenes which were realistic, but a little excessive and not very original. Since the central plot is based on science fiction, it was a let down to see the unsophisticated and not scientifically update appearance of old Jiro, the creator of Cyborg, appearing on his wheel chair. If Mr. Kwok or the production crew had seen the real life pictures of the world eminent physicist, Stephen Hawking, they probably would have a better idea how to create a more credible scientist, the central figure and to give more credence to the movie.

That being said, I still love how Mr. Kwok, the master of love stories once again showing the familiar funny and sad episodes. I also want to complement the ending episodes of the movie. It takes a little longer to end when you think that the movie ends. Just watch it! I'm also speculating the possibility of an 'intermediate movie' base on the period when Jiro is left alone to do his research after Cyborg left him. Will there be occasional visits to Jiro by Cyborg, or will Jiro have other love stories in between? Also, I think that the OST track sang by Miasa(?) is very good. So, watch this movie! It is recommended because there are lessons to be learned. You'll find your own answer!

Robot Girls Rule Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
If My Sassy Girl featured a robot instead of Jeon Ji-Hyun, you'd have Cyborg She. Kwak Jae-Yong rips off his own movie for this flawed but enjoyable manga-influenced charmer, about a dork (Keisuke Koide) whose life is turned upside down by the arrival of a totally hot girl (Haruka Ayase) from the future who turns out to be a robot. I can't remember the exact name of the Cyborg, but who cares? She's cute, and that's all that matters. This is a great approximation of a shonen manga, made all the more so by the Japanese setting and actors, plus the use of time travel and sci-fi concepts to tell a completely throwaway and fluffy story. The big drama occurs when a huge earthquake hits Japan, taxing the SFX budget to the limit, and providing the opportunity for the hot cyborg to sacrifice herself for the dorky guy. There are some twists and turns - much like in My Sassy Girl - but it's all done in service of gooey, romantic emotions that should please people who thought Video Girl Ai was the height of storytelling.
