Good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I saw this movie on TV, with the Chinse Channel in Texas. I think this movie was great. I would love to purchase this movie, however the Chinese version I saw on TV, had Bowie (a Hong Kong) actor at the beginning of each episode discussing the traditions of the Korean Court, which gives me an understanding of what's going on. I was wondering if anyone know if this set would have Bowie's introduction. If it does please let me know.

I am glad that we bought.... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
When I saw the ad of this series the first time about a year ago, I thought it was just one of those old fashion historical drama series. Then I heard more good things about it. Event my 80 years old mother who seldom spends much time in front of TV enjoyed and told me about this movie when it was shown on the TV channel in California. Our family has been enjoying Korean movies over the last three years and almost all of them are staged in the modern world. I struggled with the purchasing idea thinking why should I invest in this expensive series and ended up only I who would enjoy it? Why would my kids enjoy something that happened three hundred years ago in a different country. I finally bought it. Boy, I was so wrong in my assumption. My wife and I and my two teenager daughters who were born and raised in the State are all falling in love with this movie immediately. This series is ageless, genderless, and full with love and wisdom. The qualities of the video, audio, and English subtitle are at the best I have ever seen. The story lines are so touching, intriguing, tightly packed and there is not a moment of dullness. Although the setting is in ancient Korea, but it really speaks in the languages that are common to everyone: love and hate, good and evil, wisdom and foolishness, honesty and deception. Yes, the culture background, the palace organization and various roles may cause some confusion at the first time. But never the less, they did not hinder our enjoyment. For sure, we will remember this drama and the music for a long time.

ONCE IN A LIFE TIME...Possibly Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have never written a review about a series before, but this jaw-dropping exception prompts me say this: Having been a movie buff all my life who dislikes TV dramas for their generally superficial contrived writing, exaggerated acting, comparatively low-budge production, I have not found a more "satisfying time investment" in viewing than Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) -- nevermind the fact it is a whopping 59-episode series. Thankfully the writer(s) were able to weave a true-life story into a tight drama that is both enjoyable and enlightening.

Like many others, the idea of watching a "period" piece originally had me skeptical from my prior experience, but the powerful message of virtue that is so basic to humanity and civilization itself comes through unhindered even within any two episodes' worth of viewing. This series touches upon subjects in philosophy, innocence, love, loyalty, friendship, redemption, survival, food, medicine, even a little of war, and their counter parts in such a way that it is hard to imagine anyone who finished watching not being enlightened at all!

The only thing that I can think of when people would favor shows like CSI over this is that they are not in the mind set to enrich their lives but just want the quick thrill of entertainment (like 99.9% of the movies/series out there). To say that this series is just like many others of its kind in theme is to say that to impress one must not use the basic elements of humanity in storytelling. Is that a fair expectation, I ask? "Bad guys" appear smarter than "good guys" in life because they chose to use their mind in explorable ways, not because "good guys" are dumber but rather "good guys" rarely use their minds for those purposes. In the episode that shows how the defense minister's assistant thinks up how to help to insure the king is convinced and justified in taking 10% of the ministers' crops is the right thing to do, it illustrates that "good guys" are equally capable. Is there any benefit for anyone to watch a movie/series for entertainment that didn't have obstacles to overcome where the "good guy" does everything perfect every move and the bad guy never succeeds even in the beginning of their efforts??

As far as I'm concerned this series has now attained the status of being a CLASSIC and is a MUST HAVE for all who care about the meaning of life itself, as the series has rendered it to near perfection. Yes I said only near perfection because the series can be better - everyone can try to pick apart bits and pieces and take things out of context -- but the cost of trying to be "better" than what it is may not even be worth the risk of botching up what is already great - that is why I gave this a 10/10.

Your viewpoint is greatly appreciated.

Best Korean Drama ever!!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I just finnished watching the entire series, 1-3. This is my new favorite Korean drama I have ever watched. It is so good, and the music just haunts me. I can't stop talking about it to all my friends and co-workers, and I talk about it so much that most of them promised me that they would check it out. I can't believe I discovered this drama only recently!!!If you are Korean drama lover, this is the number one out there. My favorite used to be stairway to heaven, and love letter, but those 2 drama's don't come close to this one. Even though it's set in the olden times, it s so good.
As far as subtitles go, excellent. I'm bilingual, and i don't know what the other reviewer was talking about, yesasia's subtitles are the best that i've seen.
buy, buy buy!!!!

Based on a true story in History Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This drama was based on a true story of Dae Jang Geum, the first woman to be the Royal Physician of the King in the 1400s! Filled with lots of intense drama and a blend of Korean royal culture - court foods, actions, medicine - mixed with interactions from Japan and China, including all kinds of situations, this drama is simply outstanding!

The best Korean drama I've ever seen Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This drama is based on the true story of Dae Jang Geum, the first Korean woman to be the Royal King's physician in the 1400s of Korea's Choson Dynasty, then the time when women couldn't attain such status. I have never seen a Korean drama so good in my life - hope, courage, enduring strength, unimaginable determination and shy love . Dae Jang Geum is outstanding. For someone who is interested in Korean history and food, this is the perfect drama for them. The first half has lots of cooking shots with real korean cooking for the Royal King recipes, and the latter half is full of Korean medicine with Chinese acupuncture and herbs. Too many times I have cried in happiness and in sadness at what happened. Dae Jang Geum-fever has hit global asia and people all over the world are dressing in the traditional Korean clothing singing tunes of this drama, remembering the strong determination of this woman.

Excellent Story Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Perfection! thats what I can say about this drama. From start to finish you can feel being transported back in time! The cinematography was great! Script is tightly written. You can identify wth the characters'emotinal upheavals so easily because the director made you sure scenes are done realistically! lead actress is great and so is the lead actor! BUT the most eternatinaing of all is the lead VILLAINS in this drama! their performance was so POWERFULL!. The drama's tempo almost fell down when the villains met their ill fate in the middle of the story. However, due to the skillful making of this drama, it did not suffer a single boring scene. You would be glad you watch this one!

A masterpiece of storytelling Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This drama is a masterpiece of storytelling. The production values, writing, directing and acting are incredible for a 54 episode story. This drama is as good as the best feature films. But it's the acting which raises this wonderful picture of Korean culture circa 1500 above the average. Lee Young Ae and Yang Mi Kyung are so genuine in their portrayals that you can't help but cry when they realize their true relationship and run toward each other. And your heart's broken when their relationship ends. Ji Jin Hee is perfect as Min Jung Ho who loves Jang Geum-a desperately. All the other actors are so good you can almost believe you're really watching history.
This drama is so rich in perseverance, honor, integrity, decency, good vs. evil and touching love stories that it is absolutely rivetting and addictive.
Thank you to the prodcution company and most especially to the writer and actors for this magnificent story of Korean history.

Poor English Subtitle Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
I bought this set, and the English subtitle translation was just awful. I recommend getting the US version because I think it'll have better translation than this. Ugh. (BTW - I'm bilingual - Korean and English both) I can watch the show without any subtitle, but it's frustrating when I want to watch it with my non-Korean speaking friends!
