大觀園內，賈寶玉 (林家聲飾) 與林黛玉 (冼劍麗飾) 二人感情甚好，女的有非君不嫁之意。那邊廂的薛寶釵 (區鳳鳴飾) 對寶玉也暗裡鍾情，黛玉和寶釵常為寶玉爭風吃醋。黛玉多愁善感，落淚葬花，身體日差。寶玉誤以為黛玉將回鄉成親，刺激成病，二人始盡訴真情。賈政 (靚次伯飾) 誤會兒子姦淫婢女，當眾嚴拷寶玉，璉二嫂王熙鳳 (李香琴飾) 乘機向老爺建議替寶玉完婚，助他修心養性。各人雖屬意寶釵為寶玉妻，但恐寶玉反對婚事，故意騙他將與黛玉成親。寶玉大婚之日，把新娘換上寶釵，黛玉誤會愛郎負情，激動咯血。寶玉得知受騙，趕往與黛玉相會，惟對方已返魂乏術。寶玉傷心欲絕，決遁跡空門。
