Wrath of Daimajin (DVD) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) DVD Region 2
(1)YesAsia Editorial Description
During Japan's Warring States period, the kindly Lord Hanabusa is overthrown by the wicked Samanosuke, a tyrant who enslaves his subjects to build an immense fortress from which he will conquer the neighboring domains. A faithful samurai and a Shinto priestess hide Hanabusa's children Tadafumi and Kozasa in a mountain shrine to Majin, a giant stone statue worshipped by the local peasants as a god. Once the children come of age, Tadafumi and his friends plot to depose Samanosuke. As the struggle for control of the Hanabusa lands comes to a head, Samanosuke's evil ways anger Majin. The stone giant stirs to life, and only Kozasa has the power to check its rampage of destruction.

"Daimajin" often gets grouped together with "Godzilla" and the other cheesy rubber-suited monster movies, but it really is a different kind of movie altogether. "Daimajin" tells of a local lord who is overthrown by a ruthless underling who, once he has siezed power, cruelly suppresses the people. The lord's two small children have survived the coup and they are raised by a loyal retainer and the local priestess. They plot to return to power, but the retainer and lord's son become caught in the web of the usurper. This tale of intrigue takes up more than two-thirds of the film's running length. It is only at this point that the usurper decides that he needs to smash a giant statue of the Majin, the local god, in order to gain full control of the people. And it is only then that the power of the Majin is unleashed. In other words, most of this film is a smoothly-told tale of plots and counterplots, with heavy doses of local mythology. In the film's closing scenes, that mythology comes to supersized life as the Majin emerges to smash the tyrant. The scenes of the Majin are well-executed, much more realistic than typical monster movie fare. I enjoyed "Daimajin" very much and look forward to watching its sequels. It features heroic good guys battling grimly evil bad guys in a rich and involving story. I can recommend it highly. |
