出生為三河豪族松平廣忠的嫡長子，曾在今川家作人質，在桶狹間戰役中負責指揮大高城的補給。戰後回到三河岡崎自立門戶，與信長結為清洲同盟以斷絕西方之憂，並在武田信玄入侵駿河時相呼應，而取得遠江，將根據地移往濱松。在三方原戰役中與信玄對陣而慘遭大敗，但其後與信長聯合打倒武田勝賴，並取得駿河。在本能寺之變後，甲斐、信濃等地為家康所掌握。在秀吉嫁妹、送母親給家康作為人質的苦心經營之下，家康終於臣服在秀吉之下，成為其五大老之首。秀吉死後，家康於關原會戰中獲勝，又於大阪冬之陣、夏之陣兩役消滅了豐臣氏，掌握了實質政權，名符其實地統一天下，建立幕藩體制的基礎。
