YesAsia Editorial Description

From first-time director Lung Yi Sheng comes Demon Of The Lute, a 1983 fantasy swordplay epic featuring a ragtag group of heroes as they face off against a demonic force for evil! Chock full of fantastical characters blessed with otherworldly powers, enchanted weapons, and the remarkable ability to defy gravity at will, Demon Of The Lute is a comic book influenced wuxia sure to tickle the fancy of martial arts fans both young and old! This sweeping Shaw Brothers motion picture centers on a magical lute, whose very strings are made from dinosaur ligaments. In the hands of a skilled kung fu master, the lute emits a devastating sound, sure to annihilate anyone in its path! The lute has been missing for twenty years, but suddenly, the dangerous instrument has reemerged onto the scene, as it has fallen into the hands of the titular "Demon of the Lute," who would like nothing better than to use this deadly weapon to conquer the martial world. Can anyone stop his bid for total supremacy?

Luckily for the human race, an odd bunch of heroes have banded together to take down the evil lute wielder. These brave souls include the beautiful swordswoman "Rainbow Sword" Feng Ling (Kara Hui Ying Hung, from My Young Auntie), an orphan "Flying Monkey" Yuan Fei (Chin Siu Ho, from Mr. Vampire), a happy-go-lucky thief (Philip Kwok Chun Fung, from Hardboiled) and his cute-as-a-button daughter Xiao Ding Dong (Kei Kong Hung). But it's going to take more than teamwork alone to destroy the lute. It seems our heroes must venture out on a quest to find the famed fire bow and arrows, the only weapons that can counter the devastating power of the lute! Featuring Lung Tien Hsiang and Jason Pai Piao in a scene-stealing performance, Demon Of The Lute is high-flying action epic, full of twists and turns, and plenty of high adventure!

Product Information

導演︰龍逸昇
Director: Lung Yi Sheng

The "Scenario and Directed By" credit is rare, but Lung Yi-sheng warranted it for two memorable Shaw movies starring the lovely and lethal Hui Ying-hung. This is the first - a beautiful fight fantasy of lute demons, magical arrows, bottomless abysses, an arduous quest, hermaphrodites, a villain named "Red-Haired Evil," and a mischievous knight named "Old Naughty." It's little wonder Lung also directed, since another director might inadvertently deflate this delicate, but delightful, confection.

Fun! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
DEMON OF THE LUTE is another of those comic-book style wu xia films from the early 80's, in the same line as HOLY FLAME OF THE MARTIAL WORLD, BUDDHA'S PALM and to a degree the Yuen Clan comedies such as MIRACLE FIGHTERS. In other words, you should expect a fast-paced film packed full of outlandish characters with strange martial arts skills and weird weapons, and for whom gravity is largely optional. For those that were first drawn to Hong Kong cinema by the early 90's wu xia, it's great to find films like this in the Shaw Brothers' catalogue, which prove that Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-Tung weren't the only people exploring the extremes of wire-based action in the 80's. I'm almost tempted to give it 9/10 for its inventiveness and ability to produce a grin even on a jaded viewer like myself, but the execution isn't quite good enough to get that extra point :)

TOO MUCH WASTED TALENT HERE Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
What a shame this picture really is.Although you are warned in the intro that this movie is "for kids" the incredible cast is mesmerizing. It just sucks that amazing talents such as Kuo Choi.Kara Hui Ying Hung and Yuen Tak have to play such silly roles. The camera work is so incredibly fast that you dont get a chance to see the amazing abilities of these three Shaw veterans, who are responsible for some of the best martial arts films ever made in my opinion.
