Descendant Of The Sun (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Acclaimed filmmaker Chor Yuen (Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan) directs Descendant of the Sun, a martial arts film that bares more than just a passing resemblance to Superman's origin's story. Featuring Cherie Chung (Once a Thief) in a supporting role, the movie stars Derek Yee (who would go on to direct One Nite in Mongkok) as Shih-Sheng, a magical child sent to earth by a compassionate deity. Raised by a humble carpenter, he grows up to possess extraordinary superpowers. The hero's only weakness is the solar eclipse, which serves as Shih-Sheng's proverbial "kryptonite," robbing the young superhero of his precious powers. Unfortunately, that's when Shih-Sheng's evil nemesis decides to rear his ugly head! Plenty of demon-battling ensues in Descendant of the Sun, an F/X-laced martial arts flick with strong comic book overtones!

導演:楚原
Director: Chu Yuan

Celebrated director Chu Yuan helms Descendant of The Sun, a superman meets Hercules ala old style martial art film. Derek Yee, is a magic solar baby sent Earthbound by a benevolent god, raised by an old carpenter, has martial art superpowers and "green kryptonite" loses them during solar eclipses. That's when the evil baby counterpart shows up. Demon-paced martial arts action by Jackie Chan's kung-fu classmates Yuan Pin and Yuen Hua compliments Toho Studio style special optical effects.

Superman Ripoff, director Chu Yuan worst effort Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
Although I have never seen "Descendant of the Sun" during its theatrical release, I was eager to view this film on Celestial's restored DVD. I was expecting a great storyline with heavy swordplay action, good suspense storytelling and interesting characters that Chu Yuan is known for. Instead, the movie rips off the American Superman plot and uses too much animation rays that really gets annoying as it progress throughout the film. The plot is silly and Derek Yee, who can act and does descent martial arts in the past cannot save this turkey. He looks silly flying around on a visible wire throughout the film. I suspect that this film was Chu Yuan's later efforts before he quit Shaw Brothers because it definitely does not even come close to his earlier great films such as "The Magic Blade" "Sentimental Swordsman 1 & 2" etc. I gave this film a one star for the classic Chu Yuan set designs but other than that, don't waste your money on this film..spend it on the earlier ones.

descendant of the sun Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
This is Hong Kong's version "Superman". Pretty interesting script but was ruined by too many laser effects towards the end of the show. Both Cherie Chung and Er Tung Shen were eye-catchy in their appearence.
OK for sheer relaxation.
