Light-hearted actioner from Suzuki Seijun
|
In Suzuki Seijun's "Detective Bureau 23", two rival gangs are engaged in a bloody turf war, when a third gang intervenes and begins stealing the ill-gotten gains of the other two gangs. Shishido Jo plays a bounty-hunting detective who, in cahoots with the police, infiltrates this third gang to figure out who they are, how they are succeeding, and, if possible, to try to take them down. And it seems that all things are possible for chubby-cheeked Shishido Jo! The first James Bond movie, "From Russia With Love", had been released the year before "Detective Bureau 23" was filmed and it clearly had a big impact, as Shishido tries to pull off his best Sean Connery impression and the movie is laced with cheeky humor. Indeed, this is a movie in which just about anything can happen; for example, in the middle of the film, while in a night club filled with yakuza, Shishido Jo gets up and joins a song-and-dance floor show. "Detective Bureau 23" is filled with cheap gunsels, scheming gangsters, tireless cops, dazzling dames, and loads of improbable action. It is stylishly filmed, with early attempts at what later would become director Suzuki's characteristic cinematic techniques. And it is backed by a wonderfully jazzy film score. It all adds up to 88 minutes of good, silly early-1960s fun and flash. |
