狩猟仲間のスティーブン（ジョン・サヴェージ）の結婚式に出席したマイク（ロバート・デ・ニーロ）とニック（クリストファー・ウォーケン）。３人は数日後に、ベトナムへ出征することになっていた。最後の宴を楽しんだ後、彼らは戦場へと旅立っていく。やがて、偶然にも戦地で再会した３人。しかし捕虜となった彼らは、敵にロシアン・ルーレットを強要され、精神崩壊ギリギリの絶望的な状況に追い込まれる。それでも決して希望を失わなかったマイクは、ニックを励まし奇跡的に脱走に成功するが、その後２人は生き別れになってしまう。マイクは故郷に単身帰還したものの、以前のような明るさを取り戻すことはできなかった。そんなある日、両足を失い入院中のスティーブンと再開を果たしたマイクは、ニックが未だ南ベトナムの首都サイゴンに留まっていることを知り…。
