Chang Cheh (1923-2002) made more than 100 films in his directing career spanning 40 years. Establishing a unique aesthetics of violence and masculinity in Hong Kong action cinema, Chang also groomed a generation of action stars like Ti Lung, Jimmy Wang, and Alexander Fu. In Disciples of Shaolin, regarded as Fu's most representative work, he portrays a martial arts expert who is told by his elder brother not to show off kung fu. However, this impulsive young man fails to resist the temptation, and that causes him much more troubles than he had expected. With stunning action choreographed by Liu Chia Liang, Disciples of Shaolin is a typical Chang Cheh-style martial arts film, filled with dazzling action sequences that tell an absorbing story.

The legendary Chang Cheh made more than 70 films between 1960 and 1975, but this is considered one of the most notable. A nominal sequel to the equally acclaimed Shaolin Martial Arts, this powerful production cemented Alexander Fu Sheng’s superstardom. It is also one of the last Chang films choreographed by the mighty Liu Chia-liang. Together, they make this tale of the Shaolin vs. Manchu conflict one of the highlights in kung-fu film history.
