Professional Review of "Distance (Japan version)"

September 30, 2008

Nearly two years have passed since Hikaru Utada released her debut album, a perennial megahit with over eight million copies sold. In the build up to her next release, Hikaru ignored all the hype and quietly devoted herself to writing great new songs. However, even so, a feeling of something big gathered over her horizon. Now the wait is over, and the result is a colorful and versatile collection that includes collaborative work with TAKURO of Glay, R&B mixes, distorted guitar work that penetrates to the heart of rock ‘n roll, beautiful combinations of acoustic guitar and strings, and much more. The production relies on elaborate digital audio mixing, but Hikaru’s breathing and candid vocal style, along with exquisite chorus work, make the sound feel natural. Distance achieves an ideal balance between artistic adventure and popular sensibility that is ideal for pop music lovers today.

A+ Songs Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This album is more Americanized in genre, but still, totally different from the US/UK Exodus album. These songs are really uniqe to modern J-music which makes them interesting to listen to. Utada really has talent in her musical compositions...!!!

I don't own it -- Yet Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Ok, first off - I love Hikki! All of her music ends up being so appealing to me. I don't own any of her CDs yet, but I have some MP3s and music videos. I've heard 'Distance' and 'Can You Keep A Secret'. Both of them are really good. 'Distance' also has another version, a slower one, called 'Final Distance'. It was made when the gunnings in Osaka came. Or something like that. 'Can You Keep A Secret' is a more faster one, with more of a beat. I love to sing to it!! 'Chikazuki taiyou kimi no risou ni otorashi koborenai Can you keep a secret? hit it off like this hit it off like this oh baby..." okay, I'll stop... hey dont' make fun of me if i can't get all the lyrics right...!! Ok, time to stop. I really think whoever is actually reading my review should buy this and give it a chance!!! YAY!

Half and half Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
Half of this song is great. The other half is bad. I find Sunglasses, Kotoba ni Naranai Kimochi, For You, and Hayatochi Remix extremely boring. Wait and See, Addicted to You, Kettobase, and Time Limit are excellent. Can You Keep a Secret, Drama, and Distance are also good. Unfortunately, Hikki's voice struggling to reach the high notes ruins Eternally, which would otherwise be a beautiful ballad. Despite all its low points, I would still recommend this album.

Hikki's Best! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I am a very big Hikki fan, and when I heard this album, I was like, whoa.... This is truly Hikki at her best. The style of songs on this CD range from romantic ballads ("Eternally") to swanky rock ("Drama") to R&B-pop ("For You", "Wait & See"). The remix of "Hayatochiri" is great too. If you are new to the Hikki scene, or if you are a die-hard admirer of hers, buy this album now! You won't regret it!
