ヴェルディ以前のロマン派オペラ作家としてはロッシーニ、ベッリーニと並んで重要な存在であるドニゼッティ。「愛の妙薬」は1832年に初演され、長年にわたってドニゼッティの代表作として愛好されている名曲である。恋の病にとりつかれた男が、彼女の気を引こうと行商のいかさま薬屋から"愛の妙薬"を買って飲むのだが…。本作には、2005年にウィーン国立歌劇場にて上演され好評を博した、テノールのロランド・ヴィラゾンと美貌の歌姫アンナ・ネトレプコ主演による上演の模様を収録。大喝采の中、ヴィラゾンが名アリア『人知れぬ涙』をアンコールで再度歌うという、感動的なシーンも収録。オットー・シェンクの演出は伝統を受け継ぎながらも魅力的でウィットに富んだ語り口で物語を進行させ、ウィーンのオペラの舞台に数々の名歌手達を押し上げてきた。ここでもヴィラゾンは歌手として、俳優として超一流であることを証明している。
