Ozu followers might find it difficult to believe, but this suspenseful and emotionally powerful gangster thriller is one of the high points in Ozu's oeuvre in the silent era. Shot with stylistic flourishes such as tracking shots and sweeping chiaroscuro, Ozu has made a moody expressionist potboiler in the noir tradition a la Sternberg. Like "Walk Cheerfully", Ozu's earlier gangster film, a one-time champion boxer turned small-time ringleader finds himself moodily torn between the affections of a vamp and an innocent maiden. The climactic sequence (involving the single gunshot fired in the entire existing Ozu canon) is as powerful as any silent film you'll ever see.

Exciting silent yakuza drama Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Dragnet Girl" is a spellbinding yakuza melodrama from master director Ozu Yasujiro. Tanaka Kinuyo delivers a nicely nuanced performance as Tokiko, a young woman leading a double life as an office typist by day and a gangster's moll by night. She loves Joji, an ex-boxing champ turned mid-level thug played by Oka Joji, who absolutely smolders throughout the film.

High school hooligan Hiroshi (Mitsui Hideo) idolizes Joji and wants to join his gang. Hiroshi's sister, the sweetly innocent Kazuko (Mizukubo Sumiko) urges Joji to discourage Hiroshi from pursuing the yakuza life. Joji is smitten by Kazuko's unassuming beauty and inate goodness. Tokiko then fights to keep Joji's affections, but Tokiko too is affected by Kazuko's infectious innocence. Tokiko then urges Joji to go straight so they can start over and settle down in domestic bliss.

The film reaches its culmination when Hiroshi asks Joji for money. Hiroshi has stolen money from his sister's employer and now can't pay it back. In order to bail out Hiroshi and Kazuko, Joji and Tokiko decide to pull off one more crime -- they will rob the money Hiroshi needs from Tokiko's employer's son, a spoiled young man who has been showering Tokiko with gifts and unwanted attention. Can Joji and Tokiko succeed in this last crime and get on with a new life?

"Dragnet Girl" is a beautifully conceived, involving, and exciting story. This silent classic is truly silent; its musical soundtrack has been lost. Many of the characteristics of Ozu's visual style already are present in this feature. I particularly liked Ozu's use of yarn as a visual metaphor for the entanglements of love and domesticity. The image quality of this DVD is top-notch. I recommend this film very, very highly for all Ozu fans.
