YesAsia Editorial Description
Tsui Hark produces Dragon Inn, a gritty remake of King Hu's legendary film, Dragon Gate Inn. During the Ming Dynasty, a powerful cabal of eunuchs called the East Chamber rules the land. Led by the evil Tsao Siu Yan (international martial arts star Donnie Yen), the East Chamber oppresses the Chinese people with fear and violence. When rebels Chow Wai On (Tony Leung Ka Fai) and Yau Mo Yin (Brigitte Lin) cross the East Chamber, they flee and eventually take refuge in a desert shelter known as the Dragon Inn. But the henchman of the East Chamber arrive at the Dragon Inn, and soon the rebels could be discovered. Everything hinges on the mercenary proprietor of the Dragon Inn, a mysterious woman named Jade (Maggie Cheung). Will she smuggle the rebels out? Or will Tsao Siu Yan's arrival spell the end?
Shot on location in China's Northern Desert, Dragon Inn is an exciting martial arts epic that's marvelously entertaining! Celebrated action director Ching Siu Tung handles the dizzying, dynamic action sequences, including an amazing climactic three-on-one duel in the middle of a fierce sandstorm! Winner of the Taiwan Golden Horse Award for Best Action Choreography, and featuring commanding performances from Hong Kong leading ladies Maggie Cheung and Brigitte Lin, Dragon Inn is a Hong Kong Cinema classic that's worthy of King Hu's original film.

One of the greats of the early '90s
|
"Dragon Inn" starts slowly and ends ludicrously, but in between those flawed bookends it becomes one of the cinematic landmarks of what many regard as the golden age of Hong Kong films. The action takes place during the darker days of the Ming Dynasty; the powerful eunuchs in the emperor's court are exercising cruel control through their control of an independent police and intelligence apparatus. A military secretary loyal to the emperor rises to challenge the eunuchs' rule only to be crushed. His children become pawns in the ultimate power struggle. Under the protection of Chow (Tony Leung Ka Fai) and Yau (Brigitte Lin), the children are shepherded to the Dragon Inn, isolated in the shifting sands of a distant desert. Close on their heels are the minions of evil Eunuch Yin, seeking to snatch the children away from their guardians. Jade (Maggie Cheung), the beauteous proprietress of Dragon Inn, is concerned primarily with using the situation to enrich herself, while the local general (Elvis Tsui) seeks to keep a lid on the explosive situation. Complicating the simmering stew of intrigue is a steamy love triangle, with Yau and Jade craving the attentions of the dashing Chow. As its colorful characters scheme and squabble within the claustrophobic cauldron of the gloomy inn, "Dragon Inn" becomes sheer bliss for Hong Kong film buffs. Maggie Cheung delivers one of her most iconic performances, while Tony Leung and Brigitte Lin are winningly noble. The fight choreography is striking, particularly in highlighting Ms. Cheung's dexterity. Lots of movies have been described as being "unforgettable". Take this to the bank: You won't soon forget what transpires within this Dragon Inn. |

Remake of a classic not quite a classic
|
A brave attempt at a remake of this classic of the 60s, the movie that popularized rekindled the popularity of the martial arts genre. While the fights scenes are now technically more sophisticated (love the choreographed battle with Brigitte in the opening) as you would expect, clever occasionally breathtaking wireworks replacing the few strategically placed trampolines in the original movie, this remake somehow lacks the tension that was created by the great characterizations in the original movie, the truly frightful and “invincible” eunuch, tense and long silent pauses punctuates fights scenes, the final battle one of the longest (appears to be ) and most suspenseful duel in any movie of this genre. As wonderful as Maggie and as entertaining as was I felt she was somehow a bit out of place in this movie, the male lead also a little wimpy ,though Britgitte looks fantastic as usual dressed as a man. The unexpected ending I feel is a bit of a cop out. Despite all this it’s a good story, the humble Inn in the middle of nowhere that was transformed during the course of a week into the center of a political battleground, like the sand in the dessert the brief encounters quickly swept away. |

Beautiful rendition
|
Moving along at a slightly faster than comfortable clip, you bond readily with the characters. The fights are also unneccesarily hastened but still appreciate-able. Favorite scene has to be the bath quarrel between Maggie & Brigette's characters; but anytime these leading ladies pick up a weapon is always inspiring as well. Donnie Yen fans will be most disappointed because he doesn't get the screen time he deserves or you think he should get as the bringer of impending doom to the heroes. |

Still The Best In The Market
|
Although this Mei Ah dvd has its flaws, it is still the best in the market for this movie. I have the Hong Kong Legends dvd from UK and that dvd had only Mandarin dialogue and even more washed-out colours. The Tai Seng dvd from USA was mastered from a scratched print and is inferior to the Mei Ah. Of course I long for a perfect dvd but meanwhile, this Mei Ah dvd is the best and I would advise fans to grab it before it goes out of print. |
