YesAsia Editorial Description
Square Enix presents what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest games of 2004 in Japan, the long awaited Dragon Quest VIII . RPG fans have waited eagerly for this latest release in the Dragon Quest series.
Monster Arena: Preparation is the Key of Success
Before finalizing the formation of your team participating in the Monster Arena, players have to gather tips and information first by talking to different people. Only after knowing what kinds of enemies you are facing and their strengths and weaknesses can you get your troop in the best shape.
Team up the Best!
What it takes to win is to have a good knowledge of the characters of your monsters and group the same kind together. For example, you can have all those monsters good at bows and arrows to be in a group of Archery Unit. Other suggested groupings include the Swordplay Unit and the Cavalier Troop.
Monster Arena is On!
Here comes the Monster Arena! Hosted and narrated by Molly, the contest is in a 3-on-3 mode where a knockout of the whole unit will win. It is estimated that the round-winner will only go to the team that have defeated at least 3 to 4 monster troops.
Combination Attacks Give Combo Power!
Besides grouping your monsters according to their characters, you can also hold the edge in the game by unleashing combination attacks. There have been so far three official groupings of combination attacks but it is expected that there should be some more coming along. It would certainly be a surprise if not only the monsters but also the characters in the game can team themselves up.
This game has few rivals when it comes to the great wonders of the digital world it presents. Square Enix has created a stunning world, even more so with day and night cycles added in. You can easily converse with the different characters in your party, giving them even more personality than before. This title features a cool ability to “scout”, or capture, monsters. You can capture monsters to add to your entourage, but not without a fight of course. The animation, lighting effects, and sound are absolutely top notch.

Reach of its influence
| I have only watched it played- and have not yet played it myself. As far as I can tell, it's amazing, but it's a little hard to follow with my rusty Japanese. One thing I can conclusively say in its favor- is that DQ VIII is a huge name. Such that its Japanese PS2 release has already caused countless American voters to cast their vote for it on a nintendo-only site (nintendoheadquarters.com) as the best game of all time. The reach of its influence is unquestionable. Furthermore, it's vastly more expensive than any other title existing, and that didn't stop the lines from exceeding 300 people on the day of its release. And from what I've seen, it lives up to its name and hype. |
