YesAsia Editorial Description

Miriam Yeung and Daniel Wu to drink with fans!

Award-winning director Derek Yee's new film Drink-Drank-Drunk features Miriam Yeung as a cheerful beer girl who never gets drunk. Miriam Yeung gives up her dramatic laughter as in her previous titles but continues to shine through the movie with her talents in comedy. The chemistry between Miriam Yeung and Daniel Wu re-appears after their last collaboration Love Undercover. Daniel Wu stars as a French-Chinese chef who easily gets drunk - just the opposite to her total alcohol immunity! A light romantic comedy released in the summer of 2005, Drink-Drank-Drunk may be able to offer you an experience as pleasant as enjoying chilled beer in a hot summer day!

Director Derek Yee turns away from genres that have won him countless awards in the past and made the hilarious piece Drink-Drank-Drunk. Daniel Wu also seldom stars in comedies, although he has already stunned thousands of fans with his handsome face in various movies such as One Nite in Mongkok, also directed by DerekYee. Popular singer/actress Miriam Yeung, sparkling as in other comedies starring her, this time lives in a more realistic world. Co-starring rising Mainland Chinese actress Hu Jing, past best actor winner Alex Fong Chung-sun, comedian director Vincent Kok, sexy babe Ella Koon, and charming prince Terence Yin among others, Drink-Drank-Drunk offers viewers an amusing title that will keep the audience entertained for 100 minutes from start to finish!

Professional Review of "Drink-Drank-Drunk (DTS Version) (US Version) "

    September 16, 2005

This professional review refers to Drink-Drank-Drunk (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)
Were you among those who a) felt like your neck was snapped by the ending of One Nite In Mongkok b) felt completely numbed and brutalized by the whole experience or c) watched it purely for its reputation but didn't like it. Well, rejoice because Derek Yee has done a 180 degree back-flip and lightened up considerably with his latest effort, Drink, Drank, Drunk.

Starring the effervescent Miriam Yeung and the currently ubiquitous Daniel Wu, this is charming romantic fluff. Utterly enjoyable and very little of that is guilty pleasure, I might add, Drink, Drank, Drunk reminds me of what a successful HK comedy should be, well written gags, good pacing and a big dose of Hong Kong flavour. These are few and far between, and I savor every single one. Although not without problems, this is as undemanding and as you can get with a HK romantic comedy, without it descending into a dribbly mess of gimmicky humor. Undemanding isn't a word often associated with Derek Yee's directorial work of course. The issues in his films read like the manual on how to get yourself on a depressive bender. C'est La Vie, Mon Cherie, Lost In Time and of course, One Nite In Mongkok aren't exactly light entertainment. So experiencing Drink, Drank, Drunk by Derek Yee was somewhat of a surprising and welcome relief.

When I say undemanding I certainly don't mean it's shallow or stupid. On the contrary, despite all the usual trappings of the genre, Yee has managed to put his own crafty signatures all over it. The story may be conventional but the execution is slightly eccentric and off center. Who would insert a seemingly benign scene of toothless grannies sitting on the pavement, commenting on the lovers as they walk by? Yee also employs judicious use of creative visual cues and cuts to deliver the gags and tell the story, more so than your standard comedy. Towards the last act, you could almost detect the Derek Yee serious socio-political beast rising to the surface, but thankfully it's reined in at the right moment.

As for the people who occupy the frame, Daniel Wu and Miriam Yeung turn on their fuzzy Love Undercover chemistry here and it serves them and the audience well again. However, the show would have surely stalled if it wasn't for the supporting actors. Vincent Kuk plays the stereotypical gay friend with bitchy glee. And someone please pay Alex Fong Chung Sun double because he turns in a scene-stealing performance as Brother Nine, the small time gangster with a torch for Miriam, a funny but subtle performance that is frighteningly reminiscent of Francis Ng.

There's a genuinely well crafted film here under the romantic comedy window dressing, and although not perfect, it works for me.

Warm, Funny and Light-Hearted Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I saw one early scene of this film on AZN TV while I was flipping through channels. After 5 minutes, I knew I had to see this film and I was very entertained. Daniel Wu & Miriam Yeung have great chemistry and it shows through the whole film. This film was very well acted and the important thing is that I CARED about these characters. The story was fresh and new and after you've seen several chinese romantic comedies, you know that the "boy & girl" will most likely wind up together. What can I say? It works here. I've seen Daniel Wu in many films but I've never really seen Miriam in anything before. I have been missing out; she's funny, exciting and you just want to fall in love with her. The supporting cast was excellent and I'm glad I own this film.

Very good! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Your typical "woman meets man and rival appears" concept at play here but very properly executed. The entire cast (especially the main characters) did their job very well which was apparent throughout the film. The subject was not that "heavy" which equals a good replay value. And yeah, I can definitely see this being a movie which the female audience would like too.

chick flick Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
my g-friend forced me to watch this movie with her. i think miriam yeung is cute and all but man this movie dragged too much. the story is that miriam is siu man a waitress who serves drinks to customers and can drink endlessly without getting drunk. daniel wu is a chinese who knows how to cook french food. he drinks one glass of booze and gets drunk. and he has a french restaurant with no business because the people in hong kong don't like french food. to them french food is weird and strange tasting. he meets siu man and wants her as a business partner. later they fall in love with each other -- hit that snooze button. typical of chick flicks. the person i thought was funny was alex fong who plays his character Brother 9 with great comedic timing and his voice was funny and the way he talked and his mannerisms were funny. he made the movie go by better. but it is still a chick flick. many parts were incoherent. the scenes jumped too fast and abrupt. the story is flimsy and weak.

good movie Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It didn't capture what they had in "Love Undercover" but this is still a good movie, I love Miriam and Daniel movies, keep making them. Miriam is a beer girl and can never get drunk, Daniel is a French chef but doesn't have any money to keep up with his business because people in HK don't like french cuisine. He ends up staying at her place and they share the restaurant where he works. She works there in the day as a cafe and him with his french food at night. Daniel is offered a job and his & Miriams relationship starts to unravel...
