High Hopes

After reading several other reviews that had high praise for this movie, I had to see this movie as it covered the 88th Division, which as a history buff, holds infinite curiosity for me. The opening sequence seemingly went well, showing shots of (a model diorama) 1930's Shanghai; this is excusable, as the models were nicely done- until they began intermixing live street shots and I spotted several clearly 1970's style cars rumbling up and down the street, then various Asians and Caucasians in 1970's long -hairdos and clothing walking abot. To be honest, I don't understand mandarin, so I thought this was a "Flash forward" sequence- but this was not the case...as several Piper Archer type planes overflew the streets, disguised as Japanese bombers and then the the bombs pruduced a ridiculous chain of flying and somersaulting stuntmen. Then, as the production continued, almost all aspects of authenticity went out the window- The uniform colors were wrong (Grey instead of Green) the weapons were all modern 1970's stuff borrowed from the local Taiwanese armoury, and the action sequences were just that- overdone/acted death scene expolsion/ jumping karate flip deaths.... It was pretty excruciating to watch, but at least they integrated some historical accounts into the story from the Defense of Sihang warehouse episode, such as the soldier who leaps to his death while carrying grenades (embellished in this case as he takes out a tank instead of a bunch of Japanese soldiers.. then the numbers multiply into 3-4 similar kamikaze attacks. Then there is the heroic Girl Scout who delivers Nationalist flag to the warehouse, and the raising of the flag, and the throngs of Shanghainese who gathered to encourage the '800 heroes' onward. In these scenes, more 1970's vintage cars show up, and more Caucasian bystanders show up in 1970's long hair and clothes. Asian bystanders can be seen wearing blue jeans, members only jackets, and just plain ruined the whole effect... All in all, if you want plain overdone action with a smattering of history, this is OK, but if you want historical accuracy and appreciate a production crew that gets the details right, move on.... |
