YesAsia Editorial Description

Fresh off her startling debut performance in 2 Young, singer/actress Fiona Sit teamed with Taiwanese TV star Dylan Kuo (The Outsiders) for the romantic drama Embrace Your Shadow. Usual romantic comedy director Joe Ma Wai Ho (Feel 100%, Love Undercover), Embrace Your Shadow tells the story of Ran (Fiona Sit), a young woman who meets small-time thief Juchin (Dylan Kuo) after he inadvertently cares for Ran's six-year old niece Shiayou. Against his better judgement, Juchin begins a charitable existence, spending time with Ran, Shiayou, and Shiayou's father Feng (Cheung Kwok Keung), who suffers from a rare disease that results in paralysis. Ran may be in line for a similar fate, so Juchin puts his life on the line to find the money to pay for an operation. But when the triads come for Juchin's head, will he be able to hold them off long enough to save his newfound lady love? A subdued and gentle romance tinged with tragic triad thriller overtones, Embrace Your Shadow further demonstrates the talent for drama that director Joe Ma displayed in his acclaimed Funeral March. As the young lovers, Fiona Sit and Dylan Kuo turn in photogenic, surprisingly mature performances.

Embrace this movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Embrace Your Shadow", a film from director Joe Ma, manages to be both thoroughly engrossing and almost unrelentingly grim. The movie stars Fiona Sit as Ran, a young woman forced into a thankless life of service to her family. She makes a living by slaving over sewing piecework at home, where she takes care of her paraplegic brother and his adorable 5 year old daughter. Hanging over Ran's head is the knowledge that the she has the same condition that has resulted in her brother's paralysis and only an expensive operation can assure that she doesn't suffer the same fate.

Into the life of this family comes Juchin (Dylan Kuo), a dashingly handsome, yet mysterious, young man who is attracted to Ran. Juchin slowly becomes integrated into the family by caring for Ran's brother and playing with the little girl. But, unknown to the family, he also is a burglar who is being recruited into a triad against his will. When he resists the recruiting effort, the triad gang leader accuses Juchin of stealing money from him and demands that he repay it. Secretly, members of the gang approach Juchin and inform him that, if he will murder the out-of-control gang leader, then they will let him off the hook for the money he allegedly owes.

The film skillfully moves back and forth between the desperate home life of Ran and her family and the triad travails of Juchin. Will Ran get the surgery she needs? Will Juchin free himself of his criminal connections and go straight? You will want to follow this movie to the very end to find the answers to these and other questions.

"Embrace Your Shadow" is a much more sophisticated film-making effort than director Joe Ma's previous works. It avoids maudlin sentimentality and deals honestly with its troubled characters. And it looks great; the cinematography and editing of this film truly are memorable. I recommend "Embrace Your Shadow" very highly.

Dylan is so cute ! :) Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Although I hate subtitles, but this was an exception since I know that it wouldn't have came out in dubbed Vietnamese anytime soon so I had to get it. And cause, I totally love Dylan. I thought this movie was pretty good, it was quite the sad one. I did drop a few drops of tears here n' there... For Dylan fans, I don't think you would wanna miss out on this! He looks totally hot in here, just like in The Outsiders. Except, he's not much of a gangster here. Watch it, I tell you !!!!!!!
