  • The Founding of an Army (2017) (Blu-ray) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version) Blu-ray Region A Liu Ye (Actor) | Andrew Lau (Director) | Zhu Ya Wen (Actor) | Wallace Huo (Actor)
Following in the footsteps of 2009's The Founding of a Republic and 2011's The Founding of a Party comes the all-star Chinese historical drama The Founding of an Army, produced to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) takes the reins for this massive cinematic undertaking set in 1927 during the breakout of the Chinese Civil War between the Communists and the Nationalists. The film follows the strategic and organizational efforts of Zhou Enlai, Mao Zedong and other key figures leading up to war, and depicts important military engagements, including the Nanchang Uprising and the Sanheba Battle in Guangdong, in impressively extensive and explosive war action scenes.

As customary for the Founding series, The Founding of an Army rounds up a huge lineup of well-known stars to play famous historical figures, with Liu Ye reprising as Mao Zedong, Zhu Yawen as Zhou Enlai, Huang Zhizhong as Zhu De, Wang Jingchun as He Long and Wallace Huo as Chiang Kai-shek. Notably, many popular young stars appear in this installment to play the young revolutionaries and soldiers who would go on to become leading figures, including Oho Ou as Ye Ting, Ma Tianyu as Lin Biao, Liu Haoran as Su Yu, and Dong Zijian as Deng Xiaoping. The staggering cast also includes Li Yifeng, Lay, Lu Han, Yo Yang, William Chan, Han Geng, Guan Xiaotong, Zhou Dongyu, Chen Xiao, Crystal Zhang, Joe Cheng, Yu Shaoqun, Guo Xiaodong, Wu Yue, Song Jia and Zhang Hanyu.

The Founding of an Army begins in the spring of 1927 when conservative Nationalist forces began carrying out violent suppressions of Communist party members in Shanghai and other cities. The purges effectively ended the tenuous United Front alliance between the Nationalists and Communists, and created open divisions in the KMT between Chiang Kai-shek and other party factions. In response to the purges, Communists and like-minded revolutionaries, under the planning and leadership of Zhou Enlai, launched a military insurrection on August 1, 1927, known as the Nanchang Uprising. This date marks the founding of the People's Liberation Army and the beginning of all-out civil war.
